El Dorado County Research Requests

GREELEY

If you are able to provide the information requested, please e-mail the requestor directly. Also, I'd appreciate an e-mail so that I can indicate that the request has been fulfilled. Thank you. Marc

I'm a neighbor from Loomis in Placer County and belong to the PCGS. Am doing research on my great-grandfather John Fuller Greeley and have found a 1905 biography (History of the State of California and Biographical Record of the San Joaquin Valley, California by Prof J.M. Guinn, A. M.) This biography states that J.F. Greeley came to the gold country in the late 1850's and accepted a position in El Dorado County as a clerk in a general store serving miners at a location called Mount Gregory.

I have looked at several maps and have done web searches but I cannot find such a location in El Dorado County nor in Placer County. I suspect there was such a place but that the name has changed.

If you can help I would appreciate it. Would be willing to pay for any research. For your information, J.F. Greeley moved to Placer County in about 1860 and settle in Dutch Flat where he married, had several sons and became a deputy sheriff. In 1870 he moved to Truckee where he served as postmaster for several years before moving to Fresno where he died and is buried. He came to California from Vermont by ship via the Panama Canal.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance. Let me know if you need any information about Placer County history.
