THE MONTEREY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Monterey County Historical Society was founded in 1933 and incorporated in 1955. They provide educational services to individuals, organizations, schools, and government agencies - locally, nationally and internationally. They are located in the 1844 Jose Eusebio Boronda Adobe which they acquired in 1972 and has since been completely restored and dedicated as a museum.

They oversee and maintain the County Archives, a repository which includes early Spanish and Mexican records, original county records, wills, probate files, great registers, newspapers, directories, and thousands of historical photos. They also maintain extensive files on Monterey County people and places.

They provide research services, conducted by experienced historians, beneficial to both professional and amateur genealogists. Requests for research and information may be made in person, by phone, mail or email:

The MCHS publishes a collection of books on a variety of topics, which are available for purchase from their bookstore. They also publish a quarterly newsletter, News from The Monterey County Historical Society, which is exchanged with other historical societies nationwide.
