Map of State of California with Plumas County highlighted (image)Plumas County was formed from parts of Butte County in 1864. It was only natural to name the county for the river that flows through it - The Feather River. The river originally was named “El Rio de las Plumas” in 1821 by Spanish explorer Luis Antonio Argüelo for the multitude of waterfowl seen upon its waters. In about 1850, the name was anglicized to “Feather River.”

The total population of Plumas County, as of 2000, was 20,824. The county seat is Quincy. The only incorporated city in the county is Portola. There are just three stoplights installed at intersections within Plumas County – two at Quincy intersections and one at a Portola intersection.

U.S. GenWeb logoAbout the USGenWeb Project
In the spring of 1996, a group of genealogists with mutual interests in Kentucky genealogy organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties within the State of Kentucky where collected databases could be stored. Furthermore, the databases would be indexed and cross-referenced, so that even if an individual was found in more than one county, he or she could be located in the central index. This idea spread quickly to other states and, by the end of the summer of 1996, the USGenWeb Project was born. This project is an outgrowth of that original project. Today, the USGenWeb Project is a loosely organized group of volunteers that work to create a center for genealogical research for every county within the United States. Visit the USGenWeb Project.

Memorial, Jeff Murphy (photograph)Jeff Donald Murphy, of Redmond, Oregon, was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, son of Powell Davis Murphy and Marjorie (Morrison) Murphy. Jeff was the founder of the KYGenWeb, the USGenWeb, USBiographies, and co-founder of KYBiographies.

California GenWeb logoAbout the CAGenWeb Project
In June, 1996 as the Kentucky Project was coming to together, project organizers decided to create a page for each state, establishing the USGenWeb Project. Project organizers located volunteers that were willing to coordinate the collection of county pages for a state page. The first California USGenWeb Project page was loaded onto the Internet on 16 Jul 1996. If you would like to sponsor a California county, or volunteer in any way to help with the
CAGenWeb Project, contact Martha A. Crosley-Graham, the California Assistant State Coordinator, at mawr(AT)sbcglobal.netsubstitute the (AT) for an @ symbol.
