Los Angeles Pioneers Of 1836 This list of the members of the foreign colony in the city and district of Los Angeles was published in the "Los Angeles Herald" in 1883 and by the Southern Los Angeles California Historical Society in 1903. the origianl list was found in volume one of the city Archives by Stephen C. Foster. It is the handwriting of Don Manuel Requena, first Alcalde of the city in 1836.
Missing are the names of Abel Sterns who had already taken Mexican citizenship, and Michael White, an Englishman. Thomas Fisher, also known as "Negro Fisher", one of six of the crew of privateer Bouchard was by this time considered a Californian. He was a native of New Jersey, born about 1786, and worked as a servant for the Lugo family.
Among the listed names are N.M. Pryor, Richard Laughlin, and Jesse Ferguson who were members of the James Ohio Pattie Party, the first U.S. citizens to come to Caliornia by land. Pryor and Laughlin died in Los Angeles, both leaving decendants. Ferguson died in Baja California without children.
The only German on the list is Juan Domingo. His own name was so difficult for the Spanish speaking to pronounce that he became known as Juan Domingo, in English, John Sunday. He died in 1858 leaving sons and a daughter in Los Angeles.
The only man listed who was still living when the list was first published in 1883 was Col. J.J. Warner.
