The Catholic Church in San Andreas, began with the transfer of raw land from Charles H. Schroebel and Daniel Pillsbury to three men known only as Dennis, Wyllie and Dunning. The land transfer was recorded on April 6, 1857. Dennis, Wyllie and Dunning paid $250 for the property on which to build the existing church. It is located on, where else but Church Street. Heading north on Hwy 49, turn right at the only flashing yellow light in San Andreas and the church is directly ahead.

Hazel Willis Schroebel Finkbohner worked for, and retired from, the Department of Employment of the State of California.

During the depression years of the 1930's and early 1940's, Dad would walk the family from Mariposa Street near Oak Park to Aunt Hazel's house, at 833 West Willow Street, for Sunday dinner. We three young boys were always amazed at the complete table settings and the full meals that she prepared for us, including a meat dish, potatoes, vegetables, salad, and dessert. She always had a bowl filled with sugar cubes for the adults' coffee and tea. We three used to regularly raid the sugar bowl. This is the only place we ever saw sugar cubes. It was years later that we realized she did this because our father, Percy, could not afford all the "extras" that went along with the meals, and this, in her way, was a "love offering" for our family.

Betty H. Schroebel

August 31, 1921 - February 14, 2005

Betty H. Schroebel, born August 31, 1921, passed away at home in Stockton on February 14, 2005,

at the age of 83. Born and raised in Spokane, Washington, Betty was working at a bank when she met and later married Dr. Orval H. Schroebel, then an Army Air Corps major stationed in Spokane during World War II. After the War, they returned to Orv's hometown of Stockton. Betty was a homemaker, a mother, and an active community volunteer. A modest person, she never sought the limelight for her many contributions to the community, her friends and family. She served as a docent and trustee of the Haggin Museum for many years, where she happily spent much time on museum projects and helped with museum events. If anyone needed her help, she was there. An avid reader, especially of biographies, and a student of history, she enjoyed her years with the Nineteenth Century Club. Her summers were spent at the family lakeside cabin in northern Idaho. She was a volunteer docent at the lake's museum and she contributed to efforts to preserve the area's natural beauty. Never idle, in her spare time she would repair the cabin and dock, split wood, and tend to her garden of northwest native plants. Always self reliant, she assumed all the duties of maintaining her cabin, her home and garden, the family ranch near Milton and her other affairs after Dr. Schroebel's death in 1983. Betty was an accomplished cook and a gracious host. No one would want to decline a dinner invitation, and surprise guests were always welcome. If friends in need could not come to her, she brought her meals to them.

Betty is survived by her son, Dan Schroebel, of San Diego; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Christopherson, of Stockton, and her cherished granddaughter, Kelly Christopherson, of Sacramento. She also leaves her constant companion, her Labrador Retriever, Zoe. Any animal receiving Betty's attention was truly blessed. She was predeceased by her parents, Otto and Helen

Olsen, her sister, Beverly Boone, and her brother, Billy Olsen.

At Betty's request, there will be no public service.

Please consider a donation in her memory to the Haggin Museum, 1201 N. Pershing Ave., Stockton, CA 95203-1699, or Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95204-1953.
