SALT SPRING VALLEY SCHOOL

(Also known as Felix) 1860

A school was built in the late 1860's in this valley by ranchers Tower and Bisbee. Their ranch, sometimes known as The White House Ranch, also served as a stage and teamster stop on the Milton-Angels road. The schoolhouse was located near the center of Salt Spring Valley, overlooking the reservoir, so as to be convenient to the various ranch families then living in the valley. Mrs. Jacob Tower, (Mary L. Howard), who had come around the Horn in 1863 from Ann Arbor, Michigan, organized parties and dances to raise money for books and furniture for the new school.

When the Salt Spring Valley School District was formally organized in 1869, and the new schoolhouse erected four years later, the old Tower and Bisbee school building was moved to the ranch headquarters at Felix to serve as the post office. There it still stands, the oldest building in the valley other than certain farm structures. The school was closed in 1947 and the district was combined with Copperopolis, Jenny Lind, and Milton two years later. The schoolhouse, however, has been preserved by former students.

Teachers were from 1899-1912: Agnes Foster (Mrs. Willard Tower), Jessie Gourley, Mabel Wilson, Kate Bund, L. Platt, Agnes Gregg, V. Parkhurst, and Rebecca Gardner.

 Notes for FOSTER H. TOWER:

From Website by Rhoda and Charles Stone http://oldcorner.com/introduction.htm

A new company was organized, the Royal Calaveras Mining Company, but operating funds were not forthcoming and the mine continued to lie idle until 1919. Frank Tower and Jack Maltos were reported working the Royal in 1919, and Tower was instrumental in the formation of a new company, the. Texas-California Mining Co. which was Ii operating at the Royal In 1920-21. Still another company was formed, again with the Edmond A. Fordyce & Co. as a principal, and called the Royal Mines Corporation, and under Frank Tower as manager, operations were again attempted in 1923

In 1925, the Argyle Mining Co. of Hamilton, Nevada, acquired an option on the Royal. That lasted three years.

In 1929 the old Royal property was rejuvenated by the Royal Development Company owned by H.E. White,

Then the Western Empire Mining Co. took over in 1930 and worked the mill and flotation plant until 1931. (1) In 1932 Frank Tower resumed operations at the Royal and by 1936 had acquired full ownership of the mine by redeeming the back taxes and clearing the title. Tower operated the mine until 1942. In 1948 the milling was continued on outside ores until the Royal properties were sold to Stewart & Nuss. (2)

Midway up the west side of Hodson stood the butcher shop. Frank Tower had frequented this building many times over the years little knowing that a fortune in gold lay close below. The veteran gold-mining Bradley family did some diamond drilling in the Hodson area in the late '40's. A prospect was found very near the site of the old butcher shop. Subsequently (November 1948), Frank Tower, with his mill man, Joseph Paltor, Howard Tower, Bill Stegman and Oarence Plumb erected a crude head frame and sunk a 30-foot prospect shaft on the spot. They developed the now famous $80,000 pocket.

There were many men who put in time over the years at the Royal. Some of these were hoistmen Frank Reddick, Foster Tower, and Tony Silva (whose father was killed in the Mountain King mine); millmen JoePaltor, Frank Lane, "Doc" Lamson, and Tom Blazer; Trammer P.S. Dean; and underground, Milne Nevens (pumps and skip-tender), Howard Castle, and Allan Doe, who was killed in the mine in a cave on the 1000 foot level, shortly before the workings were shut down.
