Founding Families Of Long Beach

The Bixby Family

The Bixby Family is woven throughout the history and developement of Long Beach since its first beginnings. At one time they ranched all of the land that is now Long Beach. In 1866, Rancho Los Cerritos was purchased by the Bixby Company. Rancho Los Alamitos was purchased in the early 1870's by John Bixby, L.W. Hellman, and J. Bixby and Co.

Much has been written about this family and in such great detail that it could not possibly be adequately condensed here.

The names of Jotham, Lewelly, John and Fred Bixby along with the Flints and Hathaways appear constantly in the annals of this city. The family is still a very vital part of our civic and social affairs.
