Founding Families Of Long Beach
Harnett, Ernest and Julia
Ernest and Julia Harnett were born in England and came to Long Beach in 1889. They had thirteen children, Ivy, Kathleen, Nora, Ann, Jane, Josephine, Helen, Caroline, Edward, Jack, Thomas, Jeffery and Frank. All of the children were born in England except Ivy, kathleen and Frank. Jane was noted as a brilliant teacher and was directly responsible for bringing the University of California Extension Lectures to this city in the early years. She organized the first Student Body instituting the self-government system in Southern California. She assisted in revising the City Charter. She died during the flu-epedemic of 1918. Kathleen taught at Poly High School for many years and was beloved by her many students and fellow teachers. Frank has been associated with the Long Beach Recreation Commission since its beginning and is responsible for the preservation of "Minnie The Whale" who was brought ashore in 1897. He is a graduate of Oregon State College and has contributed much to the civic life of this community. Kathleen, Ivy, Ann, Josephine and Frank are still residents of Long Beach.
