Hirsch, George F. and Addie (Snell)

Mr. Hirsch was born in 1861 in Missouri and came to Long Beach in 1885. He was the first blacksmith and his shop was on First Street between Pine and Locust. From 1889 to 1913 he was Postmaster. Addie (Snell) Hirsch's father had the first grocery store located at Ocean and Locust. There were two children, Robert and Ruby. Ruby married Captian Thomas D McFarland who came from a shipbuilding family in Maine and brought the "Yale" and the "Harvard" around the horn for California coastal trade. Mrs. McFarland said that she was told she was the third baby born in the 'vilage".

Mr. McFarland was City Tax Collector for twenty year. Mrs. McFarland, her son Harrington and his wife Barbara and their two children, Nancy and Cynthia are living in Long Beach.
