Founding Families Of Long Beach
Houghton, Sherman and Eliza P. (Donner)
He purchased a 78 acre ranch in Long Beach in 1898. Sherman came to California in 1847 making the voyage around Cape Horn. He was engaged in business ventures in California and Mexico, speaking the native language, Spanish. His wife, Eliza came to California with the Donner Party so well known for the tragedies suffered during migration in 1846. Their son Stanley W. was born in Washington, D.C. in 1872. In 1924 Stanley and his sister Eliza deeded three acres including the old home to the city which is known as Houghton Park. Mrs. Stanley Houghton still resides in the City.
