Patterson, James W. and Effie (Gillespie)
He was born in Maine in 1869 and was a schoolmate there of John Bixby, on of the founders of Long Beach. His parents brought him to Los Angeles in 1876, then an adobe town of five thousand. About 1878 the family moved to Artesia. James Patterson was engaged in real estate in Long Beach. In 1904 he went to Chicago and took a course in music and evangelical work. Being gifted with a fine voice he traveled throughout the United States as an evangelist and singer. Mr. Patterson married Effie Gillespie. They were the parents of a daughter, Mrs. R.B. Sniveley, who is the mother of two children. In 1914 he returned to Long Beach and formed the firm of Patterson and McQuilkin, today known as Patterson and Sniveley.
