Founding Families Of Long Beach

Saunders, Lafayette and Sarah (Montgomery)

He was born in Illinois in 1845 and came to California in 1876, moving to Long Beach in 1880. During their early years they experienced three bad floods and moved their farm from the "valley" to higher ground. He was one of the first three school trustees at the Cerritos School which his children attended. Later, the children walked to the old Pine Avenue School. The Pine Avenue School, he felt, was too far for the children to walk and gave one and one-third acres of his farm for a new school, which today is Burnett Elementary.

Mr. Saunders married Sarah Montgomery in Illinois. They had three children, Netty Saunders Lewis is residing in Long Beach. This past month, she attended a reunion of the early classes of Burnett School.
