Elizabeth RAMSEY McChesney, b Bond co, IL, February 20, 1827. A pioneer
who lived through exciting early years - she came overland in an ox
team wagon from Illinois in 1848 with her mother, sister and brother
when she was 21 years of age. They came to Oregon City, OR, then to
Sacramento, CA in the gold rush. Married there in 1849 to Charles
PACKWOOD. In 1850 removed to Santa Clara valley. In 1862 moved to
San Luis Obispo county and to this valley in 1875. After the death of
Mr PACKWOOD (1866) she married W. McCHESNEY in 1868, at Old Creek, now
Cayucos, San Luis Obispo co. She raised 6 children. Lived 25 years in
this valley and 16 years in Guadalupe.

DIED: C.H. CLARK, aged 61 yrs 11 mos 7 days, in San Francisco, Thursday,
February 8, 1900. Mr. CLARK was buried in the family burying grounds,
Oakland, the funeral being in charge of a brother-in-law W. C. MASON, a
merchant of Oakland.

84 yrs 2 mos 9 days.
Benjamin Howard DRUMM was born in Lafayette co., KY, February 14,1816.
Married in KY in 1841, age 25. Emigrated west, settled in Missouri. In
1850 he crossed the plains to California to try his fortune in Califor-
nia, after a year returned to Missouri by way of Panama and brought his
wife and family to this state. Settled in Sonoma co near Healdsburg, en-
gaged in farming till 1860. Then they moved to Texas, lived there four
years, returned to California and Sonoma co til 1867 when they moved to
Monterey co. where they lived for 8 years. In 1875 came to Santa Maria
valley, and few years later moved to Lompoc, which was their home till
about a year ago, returning to Santa Maria.
Of 9 children born to them are living: C,.R. DRUMM, J.H. DRUMM, Henry C.
DRUMM, M.F. DRUMM, and Mildred A. MOORE.

DIED: SHERMAN - In Santa Maria, Monday, May 7,1900, Cabel SHERMAN, aged 69
yrs 8 mos 22 days.
Caleb SHERMAN was born in Madison co, Vermont, in 1830. His parents
moved to Illinois in '33 and to Iowa six years later. In 1848 he began
the study of law with Judge DARLING of Jackson co. In '50 he started for
California,he was delayed by illness and not till '52 did he arrive in
Marysville and then to the Eureka mines. He returned east in '55, in
1856 he married Mrs Laura BRIGGS, accompanied by his family he returned
to California by the Panama route, and settled in Petaluma. After living
in Nevada and Iowa he returned to Santa Barbara in 1874, later lived in
Oakland and admitted to the bar in 1880. Returned again to Santa Barbara
1881, where his first wife died. In 1882 he was married to Mrs Amy W.
NOBLE and moved to Santa Maria.
Of the first marriage there were five children, only two of whom, George
N. SHERMAN of Santa Maria and Mrs C.F. WHITAKER, of LaConner, Wash. sur-
vive him. Of the last marriage there was no issue.

TWO PIONEERS GONE.
Mr John C. SCOTT and his wife Mrs Ella SCOTT died early last Sunday
morning at their home six miles west of Santa Maria from typhoid pneu-
monia.
John C. SCOTT was boen in Winchester, Scott co, ILL. March 17,1839.
Mrs Ella SCOTT was born in Bangor, Maine, January 1,1848.
Mrs SCOTT nee Ella COOK with her parents moved to California in 1855,
and Mr SCOTT with his parents followed the same year, both families
locating in the northern part of the state.
In 1869 Mr & Mrs SCOTT were married at Santa Rosa and with the exception
of two years spent in Colorado they have since resided in this state.
Eleven children were born to them, nine of whom are living to mourn
their loss. The nine children all reside near Santa Maria.
