Stanley Sherwood Jr 380204 p1

Instantly Killed in Car Crash; Husband of Former Patterson Girl Victim of Mishap in Park; Speeding around the Ford Garage corner on the West Side Highway early Friday morning, Sherwood Stanley, Jr., of Berkeley was instantly killed w h e n his car failed to straighten out on the turn and crashed into Plaza Park, capsizing. Stanley was hurled through the roof of the car in its mad whirl and landed forty feet away with a crushed skull. By a queer quirk of fate, he was the husband of a former Patterson girl, Agnes Anderson, although he was headed for San Diego where be planned to attend a funeral, and had no intention of stopping here.

Terrific Crash; The body was found about five thirty a.m. by Nick Mazoni, driver of a French-American Bakery wagon who summoned his employer, Mario Ielmini, who in turn called Chief of Police Carl Busengdal. Tracks left by the tragedy clearly showed what had happened. Making the first turn all right, Stanley failed to straighten out for the second one and the car tracks straddled a small culvert abutment at. the gore corner of Plaza Park. Going into the slight dip that marks the edge of the road the car struck the soft earth of a plowed patch in the park. At the high speed the car was undoubtedly making, this was as fatal as a stone wall its momentum was checked so abruptly by sinking into the soft dirt that it nosed over. As it spun, the unfortunate driver was hurled bodily through the wood and dip that marks the edge of the road the car struck the soft earth of a plowed patch in the park. At the high speed the car was undoubtedly making, this was as fatal as a stone wall. Its momentum was checked so abruptly by sinking into the soft dirt that it nosed over. As it spun, the unfortunate driver was hurled bodily through the wood and fabric top and his skull was pierced by two splinters, causing instant death. The car did not skid, the highway being dry, nor did it hit the culvert or a tree, landing right side up and facing in the direction from which it had come at the edge of the park, Stanley's remains were found crumpled at the base of a large oleander bush, about forty feet from the car. Just when the mishap occurred can not be ascertained with accuracy, although it was estimated that it must have been within an hour of the time the body was found. Stanley was last checked at a Berkeley service station where he secured gas at 1:45 that morning, leaving an unusually long interval for arriving here at a period when traffic is light, and he was evidently traveling at a fast rate. Why he selected the West Side route is not known, either. A frequent visitor here, he knew the local streets and it might have been presumed he intended to take the new Turlock road except that he was making too high a speed to be planning to make the turn, a few yards beyond where he crashed. The most plausible explanation is that he had been dozing and aroused in time to make the first curve but could not straighten out to accomplish the second turn in time. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Stanley, Sr., of Berkeley, had planned to accompany him but remained at the last moment, due to illness of his mother. He was 42 years of age and had attended the University of California and Golden Gate College of Law, and had law offices in San Francisco. He was also a past master of Hillcrest Masonic Lodge of Berkeley. Funeral services were held at Berkeley Monday. He was a nephew of Mrs. C. P. Peterson and she and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johnson and Mrs. W. T. Ralston attended the services from Patterson.

Wellbaum Earl 380819 p1

Employee Apparently drowned by the capsizing of his light aluminum boat while spearing frogs, Earl Wellbaum of Crows Landing, lost his life Saturday evening on the river a few miles east of Patterson. Wellbaum was alone and the tragedy can only be inferred from the fact that his boat was found late in the evening, later the oars were picked up, and an intensive search for the body is now in progress, with county officials in charge of the work, so far without success. Wellbaum was a man of around 28 years, an employee of the Shell Oil Company at its Crows Landing pumping station. He had been employed there several years and was a Patterson resident for a year or two before that time. He leaves a daughter, aged 8, who is now at the home of friends, Mr. And Mrs. J. P.
