The service will be held at 11 am at Patterson Covenant Church, with burial in Patterson District Cemetery to follow. Visitation will be today, Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Her parents, Johan Sanfried and Mathilda Peterson, were natives of Sweden who settled here in 1910 after moving from Chicago. That was in Patterson's infancy. After learning about Patterson from a minister-cousin who was also a realtor, the Petersons bought land on Las Palmas Avenue, first building a barn and living in its upper level. It was in this barn that the Swedish Mission church, later to become the Covenant Church, was organized. The couple brought four children from Chicago, and three more including LaVerne in 1917, were born here. The family operated a dairy and was the first to deliver milk in town. She recalled working in the orchards and at the dairy with her brothers and sisters. After graduating from Patterson High School LaVerne married Lloyd Bowman whose family had moved here in 1919. She later worked for 15 years as the cafeteria manager at the Grayson School, then for Allen's Furniture here and Floor World in Modesto. In 1971 the Covenant Church, where she was a longtime member, did a surprise "This is your life," a tribute to her many years of service to the church and community. Those activities included helping to cook the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner when the women of the church undertook the task for a number of years. She also was an excellent cook, 20 years ago taking first place and being named cook of the month in a Better Homes and Gardens contest with her Apricot Burritos. Her community activities were numerous. She was a past president of the Patterson Garden Club, a past director of the Patterson Township Historical Society, taught arts and crafts classes for MJC's adult education program, served as a Cub Scout den mother, and belonged to the Patterson 50-Plus Club, and the Covenant Church Women's Group.
