Ray Lawrence, 73; A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 am, at the San Joaquin valley national cemetery near Gustine for Ray Lawrence of Patterson. He died Oct. 18 at Oak valley Hospital in Oakdale. He was 73. A native of Springfield, Missouri, he moved here 25 years ago from Milpitas. He worked as a groundskeeper for the Patterson Unified School district for 20 years. He was a member of the Modesto Trinity Nazarene Church. Survivors include three sons, Mike and Pete Lawrence of Patterson and Dick Lawrence of Chiloquin, Ore.; three daughter, Carolyn Palmer and Donna Lopez of Turlock and Sue Frisk of Patterson; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Johnson of Lancaster and another in Florida.

Ledezma Jesus 001123 p16

Jesus Ledezma, 60; A Gustine man who had resided in that community the past 20 years died Saturday at Emanuel Hospital in Turlock. Jesus Ledezma, a native of Mexico, died at age 60. He worked in agriculture and was a member of St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Newman. A rosary will be recited today (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. A Mass is scheduled for 10 am. Wednesday at St. Joachim s Church, with burial in Hills Very Cemetery, Newman, to follow Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Survivors include his wife, Maria Ledezma of Gustine three sons, Felipe, Raul and Pedro Ledezma, all of Gustine; two daughters, Zenida Ledezma of Gustine and Myrna Vizcaino of Turlock; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Guadalupe and Jamie Ledezma, both of Mexico. He also had numerous relatives and friends in the Patterson area.

Eulalia Carlota Lopez, 95; Eulalia Carlota Lopez died Friday at her Patterson home. She was 95. A native of Managua, Nicaragua, she had lived in Patterson the past 12 years. She had been a housewife. No services are planned. Hillview Funeral Chapel is handling the final arrangements. Survivors include two Sons, Ivan Lopez of Lake City, Fla., and Alex Lopez of Managua, Nicaragua; two daughters, Mariam Gonzalez of Patterson and America Bolanos of Daly City; 23 grandchildren, and 48 great grandchildren.

Lovato William A 000413 p10

William A. Lovato; Word has been received here of the death in Texas of former Patterson resident and teacher William A. Lovato. He died suddenly March 25 in Port Neches, Texas. Coach Lovato, as he was known, had for past two years been teaching and coaching at St. Catherine's Catholic School in Port Arthur, Texas. He was coaching his track team at a meet there when he suffered a massive heart attack. He served, as the motor development teacher at Northmead School while living here and also was the city's recreation director. Many of the local recreation programs operating today were initiated by Mr. Lovato. He will be remembered for his love and passion for youth athletics. Survivors include his wife Mary Lovato; four sons, Victor, Marc, David and Daniel Lovato; a daughter, Tern Velasco; stepchildren Jeff and Arnie Robicieux, and five grandchildren, Erin, Nina and Natalie Velasco as well as Marcus and Victoria Lovato.

Jose Olivares Loya, 82; A service will be held here today (Tuesday) for 35-year Patterson resident Jose Olivares Loya. He died Saturday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 82. A native of Mexico, he had worked here as a farm laborer. The service will be held at 10 am at Hillview Funeral Chapel, with burial in Patterson District Cemetery to follow. Survivors include two children, Cenobio Morales of Texas and Emma Gamez of Patterson, 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Mahaffey Carleen 001128 p1

Service Wednesday for Carleen Mahaffey; A service will be held here Wednesday for Patterson native and lifelong resident Carleen May Mahaffey. She died Saturday at her home after a short illness. She was 83. Born Dec. 17, 1916, at home on the family dairy at Highway 33 and Marshall Road, she attended local schools and graduated from Patterson High in the class of 1935. Her parents were Antone, a Swiss immigrant, and Mary Pedrotti Ghisletta. She was a director for the Rainbow Girls and was a member of the local Eastern Star chapter, Areme Club, California Women for Agriculture, Del Puerto Hospital Auxiliary, Patterson Garden Club. Modesto Area Model A Club, and Patterson Fire Department Auxiliary. She was affiliated with the Federated Church. She was a seamstress for over 50 years and farmed with her husband James for many years. The couple was honored for their longtime support of the Patterson Apricot Fiesta when they served as grand marshals of the Fiesta parade in 1988. They had been married 60 years, having wed on Aug. 17, 1940. She service will be held Wednesday at II a.m. at the Federated Church. Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 5-8 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Survivors include her husband, James Mahaffey of Patterson; a son, Michael Mahaffey of Patterson; two daughters, Lynell Kirk of El Sobrante and Carol Bonneau of Stockton; six grandchildren; five brothers, Stanley, Miles, Leo and Ronnie of Patterson and Stanley Ghisletta of Sacramento; and three sisters, Annalee Knoll of Crows Landing, Margarita Farrell of Modesto, and Lorenne Alves of Patterson. Frances Rogers Marks, 85; A former Crows Landing and Newman area resident has died at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Frances Rogers Marks, a native of Portland, Oregon, died Sunday at age 85. She had lived in Modesto since 1975 but had been a resident of Crows Landing and Newman since 1940. She was a retired probation officer supervisor with the county s youth authority, a position she held for 13 years. She also was past president of the Women s Club, Garden Club and Mothers Club, all in the Crows Landing area, and was a 4H leader there for 11 years. She also was active in the Crows Landing Cub Scout program for two years. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman. Visitation will he today Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto. Survivors include her husband, John Henry Marks of Modesto; a daughter, Linda Jacobs of San Diego; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mathews A C 000926 p4

A.C. Mathews, 76; Former Patterson resident A.C. Mathews died Sept. 2 in Copper Cove Village where he made his home the last 11 years. He was 76. A native of Lamesa, Texas, he moved to Modesto when he was 14 and began to play the guitar and fiddle. That led to a career as a professional lead guitarist with a number of area bands. They included Al Brown and the Alabamans and Arkie and his Hillbillies. He also was the lead guitarist and fiddler for Wanda Faye and was offered a touring job with Luke Wills, brother of the famous Bob Wills. He came from a musical family. He and brother Ray Mathews were considered to be some of the finest musicians in this area. A niece, Cyndie Mathews-Homen performs locally with the Hometown Band. He was a member of the Musicians Union and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-45. A graveside service was held Sept. 14 at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery near Santa Nella. Survivors include his wife, Florence Mathews of Copper Cove Village; two sons, Ron and Dennis Mathews, both of Modesto; a daughter, Cheryl Lanzarotto of Delhi; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Ray Mathews of Patterson; and a sister, Faye Williams of El Paso, Texas. A benefit farewell ‘jam session' will be held Oct. 8. Any interested musicians may call 892-2244 for additional information. Mattos Anthony R 001026 p5

Anthony R. Mattos, 82; Lt. Col. U.S. Army (ret) Anthony R Mattos, a native of~ Patterson, died Wednesday in Florida where he made his home. He was 82. He lived in Cape Coral, Fla., moving to Lee County in that state in 1970. During his 21 years if the Army, he attended a number of military school including the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer Course and the Armed Forces Staff College. His military assignments included professor of Spanish at the West Point Military Academy, liaison officer with the Inter American Defense Board in Washington, D.C., three tours in Brazil as a sergeant, first lieutenant and lieutenant colonel, and two tours in Panama. He was a graduate of Stanford University, holding bachelors and master's degrees. He served in France and Germany with the 100th Infantry Division during World War II. Over the years in the military he received the Bronze Star and numerous commendations. He was a lifetime member of the Retired Officer Association and was a member of St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church. A Mass will be celebrated next Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the church where he was a member, 1922 SW 20th Ave. in Cape Coral. Burial in Memorial Gardens in Fort Myers, Fla. will follow. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Indian M. Mattos, son Daniel, daughter Anita, two grandchildren, five nephews and one niece. Sharon McCloud, 47; A memorial service was recently held in Bend, Oregon, for a woman who lived here for a number of years. Sharon Roberson McCloud died Dec. 13 in Bend. She was 47. A native of Hayward, she had lived in Patterson for 40 years. She graduated from Patterson High School in the class of 1970, attended Modesto Junior College for a year, and worked for many years at Patterson Frozen Foods. Survivors include three daughters, Cara Hair and Corie McCloud, both of Bend, and Clorissa Hill of Reno, Nev.; six grandchildren; and her father, Carl Roberson of Bend. She was preceded in death by her mother, Jan Roberson, and a brother, David Roberson.

McGuire Walter W 000817 p6

Walter ‘Chisel' McGuire, 73; Services are scheduled for today (Thursday) for long-time Pattersonite Walter William McGuire. He died Monday at his local residence. He was 73 and had recently been in declining health. The native of Neelyville, Mo., moved to Grayson with his family when he was a teenager. He was a self-employed mechanic after working for the late John Nunes Sr. for a number of years. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Patterson. Well-known and well liked by many local residents, he also was a member of American Legion Post 168 of Patterson, having served in the U.S. Army for two and a half years. He entered the service in mid 1943 and was in an antiaircraft battalion in the 77th Infantry Division. He saw action in the Philippines where he was wounded in the shoulder and elsewhere by airplane debris. He was awarded the Purple Heart as well as a Bronze Star, Victory Medal and the Pacific Campaign Medal. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery at Santa Nella. Survivors include his wife Laura McGuire of Patterson three sons, Rocky of Stevinson and Jerry and Ronald McGuire, all of Patterson a daughter, Barbara Emmons of Patterson, eight grandchildren, and a brother, Thomas McGuire of Hesperia. Remembrances should be sent to Memorial Fund, First Assembly of God Church, 18 5. Sixth St., Patterson.

Vincent Navarrette Meza, 71; Former Patterson resident Vincent Navarrette Meza died Monday at the Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was 71. A native of Patterson, he lived here until 1951 and most recently was residing in Loyalton. He was a parts maintenance employee of General Motors and a member of V.A.W. Local 2162. When he left Patterson he served in the United States Army from 1951-53. A memorial service will be held this Friday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m. at the Sales Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto. A graveside service is planned for next Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery near Gustine. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Meza of Loyalton; three sons, Mike of Antioch, Vince Jr. of Castro Valley, and Jim Meza of Loyalton; two daughters, Debbie Gomez of Reno and Donna Brown of Modesto; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Louie Meza of Fresno; and three sisters, Margaret Luna and Ruth Garcia, both of Newman, and Pieda Sutterly of Berkeley.

David Angel Miller, infant; David Angel Miller, infant, died shortly after birth Tuesday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was the son of Timothy Miller and Monica Ortega, both of Patterson. Other survivors include a sister, Yesenia Ortega of Patterson. Grandparents Rachel Crowder of Patterson and Miguel and Mafia Ortega of Newman, and great-grandmother Maria Galindo of Turlock. A graveside service was held Monday afternoon at Patterson District Cemetery.

Minniear Ore H 001205 p3

Ore Howard Minniear, 82; Ore Howard Minniear, who grew up here and was a member of a well-known family, died Sunday at the home of a daughter in Aromas. He was 82 and had been in declining health. He was born in San Jose, the son of ON and Hazel (Howard) Minniear, and was raised in the Westley area on his grandfather Howard's ranch. He graduated from Patterson High in the class of 1936, than served in the Army Air Corps, advancing to the ranch of first lieutenant. He flew various missions during World War II and also served as a flight instructor. After the war he worked as a crop duster pilot in the Stockton area, then spent 19 years with the California Youth Authority before retiring. Also known as "Spook," he was married for 53 years to Frances Minniear who died four years ago. He had lived in Aromas with daughter Michele Minniear the past four years. Besides his daughter, he is survived by sister-in-law Louise Minniear and several nieces and nephews. At his request, no services are planned. Cremation is being arranged by Healey Mortuary in Salinas. Remembrances may be sent to the Hospice Foundation of the Monterey Peninsula, 100 Barnet Segal Lane, Monterey, Calif. 93940.

James E. Montgomery, 75; Private burial is planed in San Francisco for Patterson resident James Everette Montgomery. The Northbridge, Mass., native died at age 75. He had lived here for one year, having retired after working as a construction contractor for 50 years. He also was a U. S. Navy veteran who served during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Leona Montgomery of Patterson; three sons, Paul R. of Washington, Steven F. of San Ramon, and James A. Montgomery of Danville; two daughters, Judith A. William Dee Morgan, 80; A memorial service has been held here for longtime Patterson resident William Dee Morgan. He died Jan. 3 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. He was 80. A native of Finley, Tenn., he had lived in Patterson for 39 years. He moved to Phoenix, An,., in 1948, then to this area where he worked for local farmers Warren Hicks and Merlin Thorkelson. The service was held Monday at the home of George and Debra Reichmuth. Private inurnment is planned in Tennessee. Allen Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Morgan of Patterson; two sons, Dewey and Royce Morgan, both of Tennessee; six daughters, Buelah Fay Turner and Doris Jean Fisher, both of Tennessee, Debra Reichmuth of Patterson, Jacklyn Weatherford of Red Bluff, Janice Robinson of Modesto, and Linda Rosa of Newman; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Charlie and Don Earl Morgan, both of Tennessee.

Leland John Murphy, 80; A long-time Patterson resident died last Wednesday at Arbor Valley Nursing Home in Modesto. Leland John Murphy, 80, was born in Stockton but had lived in Patterson for 72 years. He served as a police officer for the city of Modesto for 31 years, retiring in 1977. He then worked in farming and was a gardener here for some 25 years. He also served in the U.S. Army for five years during World War II, seeing action in the European theater and advancing to the rank of first lieutenant. He participated in the invasion of Normandy and received the Purple Heart after being wounded. A funeral service was held Monday at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include two sisters, Geraldine Lynch of Manteca and Aileen Murphy of Reviera Maya, Mexico. The service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Ceres Memorial Park. Visitation is slated for Thursday from 4-8 p.m at the chapel Survivors include two sons, John and Tom Navarro, both of Modesto; five daughters, Margaret Ann Galvan of Mewman, Pauline Lopez of Battle Creek, Mich., Rosalinda Modrell of Ceres, Jenny Sierra of Union City, and Ruth Sierra of Patterson; and eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Herman Ohlson 85; Services will be held today (Thursday) for life-long Patterson resident Herman Olhson. He died last Saturday at the San Luis Convalescent Hospital in Newman. He was 85. A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Patterson Covenant Church where he was a longtime member. Burial in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery near Santa Nella will follow. Visitation will be today from 8:30 to 11 am at the church. Hillview Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. He was the son of Erick Wilhelm and Agnes Ohlson who immigrated to this country from Sweden. He farmed here for 60 years and served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator during World War II, seeing action on Luzon in the southern Philippine campaign. He was a longtime member of American Legion Post 168 and was a past commander of the post. Survivors include a son, Brooks Ohlson of Granite Bay; a daughter, Janice Brooks of San Jose; three grandchildren; and a brother, Alvin Ohlson of Modesto. He was preceded in death last February by his wife Sylvia. Remembrances should be sent to the Patterson Covenant Church Memorial Fund, 435 W. Las Palmas Ave., Patterson.
