Torres Miguel P 000113 p8

Two Locals Involved in Robbery; One Killed; A number of Pattersonites were temporarily homeless last Friday afternoon when a section of North First Street was cordoned off by Sheriff s Department deputies. They were seeking suspects involved in a shoot-out inside a Modesto jewelry store that occurred Friday about noon. A Patterson man, Miguel Peralta Torres, was killed in a hail of gunfire exchanged with two Modesto police officers inside the McHenry Village store. Torres, 41, allegedly pulled a 9mm handgun from beneath his coat and began firing. Wounded officer Chuck Cahoone, 34, was listed in serious but stable condition on Saturday, and Defective Kevin Bertalotto, 41 , was upgraded to good condition. The now famous black car with the red pinstripe was located in Patterson about two hours after the Modesto incident after a local resident put in a call. Black Cars Stopped: The car was the object of an intense search, and many cars in surrounding areas fitting the description were stopped.. After it was found in Patterson, helicopters began circling the area, and police personnel from the Modesto Police Department as well as the Stanislaus County Sheriffs Department. including, of course, Patterson's sub station, showed up to help. The area was secured br more than five hours, while residents of homes were left wondering what was going on and where their loved ones were. As the five o'clock hour came and went, many people began to arrive home from work to find themselves without a place to go. They were scared about what was going on and worried about those inside their homes. "I got my wife in there!" one man cried. Many had called to check on loved ones. Rick Garnica of Patterson called to check on his mother, Dolores, who was inside his house in the area. She did not answer the phone, but was known to be in the house. She was contacted and escorted out to her family. Couldn t Go Home: One little boy, the last stop for the school bus, couldn't go home. His parents were worried and the bus driver didn't know what to do. "If they are in there they are safe," a Modesto police officer assured many residents. Mark Rodrigues worked in Modesto and arrived on the scene unaware, "I'm hoping my family's not there," he said, concerned. "I came home and it was all closed off." Meanwhile, three helicopters circled the area, along with a plane. Some were news cameras, which were warned to keep their distance. One helicopter reportedly had some problems and had to land in the field near McDonald s restaurant. Local Arrested: After hour of waiting, a woman was arrested on a parole violation and the entire ensemble cleared out at about 8 p.m. Was the woman the driver? Pattersonites wanted to know. Was it even the right car? Saturday investigators said they believe she was the driver, and that the 1990 Chevrolet Lumina was the getaway car. Socorro Peralta Torres, 42, is the sister of the suspect killed on the scene, Miguel Peralta Torres. She led police to a home in Planada, where suspect Leobardo Guerrero was arrested. Guerrero. a Mexican citizen. was booked for investigation of attempted robbery and murder because of Torres death. T he other suspect, known only as Carlos," is believed to be a Mexican citizen who may be on his way home. Police believe Carlos is driving an ‘80s red Chevrolet Luv pickup truck with an awkwardly fitting black camper. Anyone with information about the crime or the suspects should call 572-9500.
