Calibillo Mario 010628 p1
Bodies Identified in Crash; Tentative identification of two men that were involved in a fatal car crash near Interstate 5 on the evening of Thursday, June 14, was recently announced. According to Linda Piarce, secretary for the Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department, it is believed the two men are Mario Calbillo, 23, and Juan Jose Escalante, 33, both of Patterson. She said that they were tentatively identified by family members descriptions and property owned by the men. "There were also witnesses that saw them in the vehicle before the accident," she said. Autopsy reports are still being conducted and are projected to take about four to six weeks to complete," Piarce said. The autopsy started the day after the accident. A report from the California Highway Patrol says the car believed to have belonged to Calbillo and Escalante was a 1989 Dodge Diplomat. They were driving north on 1-5 at high speeds, and it appears that the driver lost control of the car and went off the freeway and rolled down an embankment, about one mile south of Sperry Avenue. Fire quickly engulfed the car, as the two men were trapped inside. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The Dodge Diplomat is believed to have been once the property of the city of Patterson, used by the Patterson Police Department. The vehicle was given to Del Puerto Hospital in the early l990s. Recently, the vehicle was advertised in the Irrigator to be sold, and was sold to a private party. Katie Carlock, deputy for the coroner s office, is working on the case; the results of the autopsy are tentatively set by the middle of next month.
