Connors James Rev 011004 p1

Mass Said Today for the Rev. James Connors; A memorial Mass will be said tonight, Thursday, at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for the Rev. James Connors who died on Friday, Sept. 28, in Montebello. He was 88. Born July 30, 1913, James Connors lived near Chicago s De Paul University. One of the 60 Vincentian priests there suggested in 1926 that Connors attend a preparatory high school and boarding school, which is now St. Vincent's College of Cape Girardeau, Mo. Connors then moved on to St. Mary s Seminary in Perryville, Mo. and Connors studied liberal education, philosophy, and theology. He formally joined the Vincentian order in 1934 and was ordained a priest in 1940. Parishes Connors stayed at St. Katherine s Church in New Orleans for 15 years, learning every phase of running a parish and while there was director of the Black Catholic Youth Organization CYO, which involved 12 parishes. In 1955 he was assigned to Sacred Heart Catholic Church here for the first time and was to come back to Patterson many times to serve the people here. "I was the, first Vincentian pastor of Sacred Heart, but it was more than that," he said in a 1997 interview with the Patterson Irrigator. "Sacred Heart is a parish of 40 square miles. It goes all the way to San Jose." In 1956 the plans were made to build a catholic school and he organized the school building committee. Father Connors also started the CCD training program. After serving here four years he went to St. Charles Church in San Francisco and served as pastor there and then to Los Angeles to be pastor of St. Vincent Del Paul Church. He was director of the Ladies of Charity in Los Angels at this time.

To Texas: After three years in Los Angeles, Father Connors was called to St. Phillip Neri in Houston, Texas and served eight years there. Then it was back to Patterson. again. "I received an urgent call from Provincial Father Joseph Falanga asking me to come back to Sacred Heart Parish in Patterson in 1974," he said in the 1997 interview. He then served three three-year terms or nine years here and when the Rev. Tom Cargo took over as pastor he asked Father Connors to stay on a year with him. In 1984 Father Connors went to Los Angeles again, this time as hospital chaplain at Queen of Angels Hospital and stayed there until the hospital merged with a Presbyterian hospital and closed Queen of Angels. In 1988 he served as chaplain at O Connor Hospital in San Jose.

Patterson again: In 1989, Father Connors came to Patterson again. "I came here to live, retired as pastor emeritus, and was free to do as I wished with Patterson as a home base," he said in the Irrigator interview. "But Father James Galvin was sick twice during that time so it was fortunate I was here. Father Galvin left to go to Santa Barbara in 1995 and Andy Bellisario came here to serve as pastor." Father Connors left Patterson in 1997 but came back to visit many times in the last four years as often as time and his health allow and was welcomed warmly by the congregation who considered him their beloved priest.

Escalante Juan J 010628 p1

Bodies Identified in Crash; Tentative identification of two men that were involved in a fatal car crash near Interstate 5 on the evening of Thursday, June 14, was recently announced. According to Linda Piarce, secretary for the Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department, it is believed the two men are Mario Calbillo, 23, and Juan Jose Escalante, 33, both of Patterson. She said that they were tentatively identified by family members descriptions and property owned by the men. "There were also witnesses that saw them in the vehicle before the accident," she said. Autopsy reports are still being conducted and are projected to take about four to six weeks to complete," Piarce said. The autopsy started the day after the accident. A report from the California Highway Patrol says the car believed to have belonged to Calbillo and Escalante was a 1989 Dodge Diplomat. They were driving north on 1-5 at high speeds, and it appears that the driver lost control of the car and went off the freeway and rolled down an embankment, about one mile south of Sperry Avenue. Fire quickly engulfed the car, as the two men were trapped inside. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The Dodge Diplomat is believed to have been once the property of the city of Patterson, used by the Patterson Police Department. The vehicle was given to Del Puerto Hospital in the early l990s. Recently, the vehicle was advertised in the Irrigator to be sold, and was sold to a private party. Katie Carlock, deputy for the coroner s office, is working on the case; the results of the autopsy are tentatively set by the middle of next month.
