Richard Allen Hannagan, 59; A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman for Richard Allen Hannagan who died Wednesday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was 59. He was a native of Santa Cruz and lived in Newman for 10 years. He worked for 30 years as a truck driver. He is survived by his sons, Ritchie Hannagan of Macon, Missouri, Patrick Hannagan of Newman and Tony Hannagan of Los Angeles; his daughter Tina Glitz of Patterson; his brothers Jim Hannagan and Brad Hannagan, both of San Jose, Raymond Hannagan and Danny Hannagan, both of Patterson, John Hannagan of Oregon and Mike Hannagan of Merced; his sisters, Maryann Medeiros, Betty Maltsef and Jeannie Beason, all of San Jose and Carrie Millward of Patterson and five grandchildren. A visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. Burial at Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman will follow the funeral service on Tuesday.

Evelyn Rose Harter, 83; Evelyn Rose Harter, who worked as a waitress for several Patterson restaurants, over the years, died last Friday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. She was 83. A service will be held today, Tuesday, at 2 p.m. at the Patterson Covenant Church. Burial will be in Winner, S.D. Hillview Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. She was born in Rosebud, S.D., and had lived in Patterson for 37 years. Besides working as a waitress, she was a volunteer at the St. Vincent dePaul Thrift Store. Survivors include her husband, Fred Harter of Patterson; a son, Marvin Burnette of Nashua, N.H.; a daughter, Joann Testerman of Patterson; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother Chester Janis of Oakley; and a sister, Lillian Boltz of Oregon. Maria "Pearl" E. Hernandez; Services will be held here Friday for Maria "Pearl" Esperanza Hernandez, 83, who had lived in Patterson for 50 years. She died Sunday in Turlock. She was a native of Merced and had been a homemaker. The service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. Arlin Ray Hilburn, 76; A memorial service was held Monday afternoon at Hillview Funeral Chapel for Arlin Ray Hilburn, 76. He died last Wednesday at his Patterson home. He was a native of Paragould, Ark. and had lived in Patterson the past 10 years, moving here from Antioch where he had made his home for 20 years. He retired from PG&E in 1987 after working 14 years as a carpenter. He attended the Church of Christ Church in Patterson. Burial was .in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery near Santa Nella. He was raised on a farm near Marmaduke. Ark. and attended schools there until he left high school to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Seabees and was a part of the Iwo Jima assault forces in 1945. Three years later he married Betty Kinnard and they spent most of their married life in California except for a brief time in Rogers, Ark.. He was a carpenter by trade and plied his skills in various work places over a 40 year period. Survivors include his wife of nearly 53 years, Betty Hilbum of Patterson; four sons, Randy of Bakersfield, Darrel of Antioch, David of Patterson and Mark Hilburn of Santa Rosa; a daughter, Missy Beaver of Brentwood; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Archie Glen Hilburn of Fernley, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews. Beulah E. Houtchens, 91; Beulah E. Houtchens, a former Patterson resident who lived here 51 years, died last Friday in a Stockton hospital. She was 91. Born in Byars, Okla., she moved to Patterson in 1932 and was a homemaker throughout her life. She was precede in death by her husband Dan in 1979. In 1983 she moved to Stockton to be near her son. She was a member of the Assembly of Good Church here and attended Lakeview Assembly in Stockton. No services are planned. Visitation will be held Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way in Lodi. Private burial is planned at the Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Don of Stockton and Wayne Houtchens of Vancouver, Wash.., seven grandchildren and 15 grandchildren. She also preceded in death by a son, Bob Houtchens. J. W. Howard, 79; The brother of a Patterson woman died last Friday. J.W. Howard of Newman died at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 79. He was a native of Morilton, Ark., and had lived in Newman for 56 years, working as a milk receiver for Carnation Co. in Gustine for 32 years. Before moving to Newman he served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newman, as well as the Newman 50-Plus Club. A service will be held today,Tuesday, at 10a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Newman, with burial in Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman, to follow. Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman is in charge of the arrangements. Betty S. Howell, 72; Former Patterson resident Betty S. Howell died Tuesday at her home in Escondido after an extended illness. She was 72. She was a homemaker and belonged to the Ladies Group at the Meadow Lake Country Club for 25 years. She also was a volunteer for numerous charitable organizations. A native of Ripon, she graduated from Ripon High School in the class of 1947. She and her husband lived here from 1971-73. after which they moved to Escondido. They were acquainted with numerous Patterson residents. A funeral service will be held here Monday at the Federated Church. Burial will follow in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, George Howell of Escondido; a daughter, Karen Azevedo of Gustine; one grandchild; and three brothers, Elwood Schut and Michael Schut. both of Patterson, and Alan Schut of Berkeley. Leslie Edward Jones Sr., 53; A memorial service was held Saturday noon at Hillview Funeral Chapel for Leslie Edward Jones Sr. He died Wednesday at his Patterson home at age 53. He was a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., and had lived here the past four years. He previously resided in Fremont for 18 years, and worked in sales and service at a transformer company in Reno for 20 years. He was a member of the Tracy Golf and Country Club and was an avid bowler at Cloverleaf Family Bowl in Fremont. Survivors include his wife, Donna Jones of Patterson; a son, Leslie Jones Jr. of Patterson; two daughters, Cathy Warren, of Patterson and Bonnie Fegarido of Modesto; seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren; and a sister, Charlotte Roles of Texas. Thomas Patrick Keller, 66; Former Patterson resident Thomas Patrick Keller died Monday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto following an extended illness. He was 66. A native of Oakland, he had lived in Capitola the past 15 years. Prior to that he was a self-employed businessman in Patterson for over 25 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church here and was a past president of the local 20-30 Club. He was a charter member of the California Apricot Advisory Board, a former member of the Patterson Planning Commission, served as a director of the Patterson Westley Chamber of Commerce, and in 1990 was one of a number of those who founded the Apricot Fiesta who was honored as grand marshal of the Fiesta parade. He was raised in Niles, the son of Lawrence P. and Marie Evelyn Keller. He graduated from Washington High School in 1953, from San Jose Junior College in 1955 and from Stanislaus State College in Turlock in 1963 with a bachelor s degree in business management. He also was vice president of the senior class at SSC. He was the great-grandson of John Green, an Irish immigrant and businessman who had considerable land holdings in the Dublin area. Green served as a supervisor in Alameda County from 1963-67 and was the owner of the world champion black trotting stallion Directum. A Mass will be celebrated this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Patterson District Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Survivors include a son. David Keller. and a daughter, Sand Keller Mullen, both of Patterson; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Thomas Keller. Robert LeRoy Knowlton, 68; Robert LeRoy Knowlton, who had lived the past 14 years in Patterson. died Saturday at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek. He was 68. A native of Berkeley, he was a carpenter and superintendent of Knowlton Construction of Watsonville for 35 years. He lived for 15 years in Livermore before moving here. He served in the US Army. Seeing action in Korea. He enjoyed flying airplanes and driving his car. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah s Witness, 480 Green Valley Road in Watsonville. Private burial will be in the San Joaquin National Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Robert of Patterson and Jason Lee Knowlton of Las Vegas, Nev.; three daughters, Julie Pebbles Moore of Patterson, Susan Marie Sutton of Antioch, and Debra Lynn Knowlton of Concord; four grandchildren; two brothers, Bill of Watsonville of Oregon; and two sister, Dollie Hollingsworth of Watsonville and Viola Hertzberg of Walnut Creek.

David Ray Krum, 37; A funeral service will be held here Wednesday for David Ray Krum, 37, who lived a number of years in Patterson. He died Aug. 20 at his home in San Bernardino. The coroner is determining the cause of death. A native of Fresno, he worked as a substance abuse counselor. He served in the U.S. Army after graduating from Patterson High School in the class of 1981 and had resided the past 10 years in San Bernardino. Elizabeth T. LaFountain, 74; The mother of a Patterson man died Aug. 16 at her home in Hayward following a long illness. Elizabeth "Betty" LaFountain, 74, was born in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Bernard and Josephine Carragher. She grew up in the Bronx borough of New York City and married William J. LaFountain in that city in 1950. The couple soon moved to Portland, Conn., where their children were born. She had resided in Hayward since 1962 when the family moved to the West Coast. Diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease in 1994, she continued to live at home with her husband and son Robert who moved in with them in 1995 to provide assistance. They entered a nursing home in 1998 and William died the next year. She recently entered a hospital with heart problems but came home two days before her death. According to her wishes her remains and a few favorite items were cremated. The ashes will be scattered at sea this Friday, Sept. 7, from aboard the Neptune Society s Naiad, which will cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge to the waters off the Marin headlands. Her husbands remains were scattered nearly two years ago at the same site. Survivors include three sons, William B. LaFountain of Patterson, Robert A. LaFountain of Hayward, and John Henry Aim of San Lorenzo; a daughter Katherine Edrissi Gordon of Newark; grandchildren Brian B. LaFountain of Patterson, Brendon C. Edrissi of Newark, and Scott W. LaFountain of Modesto; and a sister, Mary Noonan of Fremont.

Local Man Killed When Hit by Van; A local man is wanted for questioning for an early Sunday morning accident that has left a Crows Landing resident dead According to California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Killian, 21 year old Carlos Penoez is the last person known to be driving a 1989 Chevrolet van that struck and killed 33 year old Larry Lay. Both men are from Crows Landing. The accident occurred shortly after midnight, as Lay s motorcycle was sitting on the east shoulder of Highway 33 near Elfers Road where Lay had run out of gas. Lay was struck and thrown into the weeds approximately 100 feet north of the motorcycle. "We don t know the extent of the injuries, other than they were fatal injuries," Killian said. The van was found later abandoned on a canal bank about a quarter mile south of Pomelo Avenue. So far no witnesses have come forward. Killian said the CHP has been in touch with Penoez s parents and place of employment, but he is only wanted for questioning about the accident. "We re not saying he is responsible," the spokesman said. "He was the last one seen driving the vehicle that evening, around 7 p.m." Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Penoez, or who witnessed the accident should contact the CHP at 545-7440. Larry Raymond Lay was a native of Hayward and had lived here the past three years. He worked as a plumber for Bob Gallup Plumbing for two years and was the third generation of his family to take up the trade. He is survived by his parents, Larry and Suzanne G. Carey Lay of Crows Landing; two brothers, Patrick of Modesto and Leonard Lay of Oakland; a sister, Suzanne Wright of Crows Landing; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and grandparents Bernie and Edna B. Albratt and Russell and Frances Snelgrove Carey. A memorial service will be held this Friday at 1 p.m. at the Church of Ladder- day Saints, Crows Landing Ward. Ernest Joseph LeDay, 63; Final rites will be held in Newman for former Patterson resident Ernest Joseph LeDay. He died last Tuesday at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. He was 63. He was a native of Malatte, La., and had lived in Newman the past four years. He previously resided in Patterson for 11 years, and worked as a detailer with Stanford Honda for 35 years as well as being a handyman in this community for some time. He also played the accordion in a Cajun band for many years. He was a member of St. Joachim s Catholic Church in Newman, where a Mass will be held Friday. Dec. 28, at 10 am. David G. Leon, 89; David G. Leon, a 30-year resident of Patterson, died Monday at Pleasant Care Convalescent Hospital in San Diego. He was 89. A native of Tucson. Ariz. he was a farm laborer for over 70 years, last working for Cabral Farms on the West Side. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Patterson. Jorge ‘Hawk LeRand Sr., 71; Jorge ‘Golden Hawk LeRand Sr., a Vernalis area resident the past 17 years, died Feb. 15 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was 71. He had been in declining health for some time, although hospitalized only one day. The Arizona native moved here from the Bay Area in the mid-1980s. He was an active volunteer for Rising Sun and Grayson School functions where he was involved with parent organizations, and spent his time in support of his five children. He also was a member of Circula De Hombres. While residing in the Bay Area he became an activist and a member of the Brown Berets. In the 1960s he ran for the city council of a South Bay city, using the slogan "Representation of the ‘Little People Voice in government for all." He recently said that his views and political stance had not changed over the years. A memorial service will be held this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Rising Sun School in the Vemalis area. Survivors include two sons, Jeorg Jr. of Niles Canyon and Bruce LeRand of Fremont; three daughters, Monica O!guin of Patterson, Cherilyn LeRand of Vernalis, and Renee Thomas of Hayward; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his mother, Anita Santos of Escalon; two brothers, Tony Aranda and Carlos Santos, both of Escalon; and three sisters, Anita Cruz and Olivia Miramontes, both of Riverbank, and Priscilla Munoz of Manteca.
