Trio of Accidents Leaves Four Dead; Longtime Patterson residents claim that tragic vehicular accidents often occur here in groups of three. Such was the case late last week when three separate accidents took four lives, including those of a Grayson man and his 5-year-old daughter. Theirs was the first crash, and it occurred Friday about 3:40 p.m. on River Road south of Oaklea Road in the Grayson area. Jesus Alvarado, 38, was southbound on River Road in a Plymouth van which for an unknown reason crossed over the center line and struck a Ford pickup head-on. Alvarado, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed as was his 5-year-old daughter Andrea, who was wearing a lap belt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Wearing seat belts: The occupants of the pickup, driver Michael Bogetti, 23, and Stephen Bogetti, 44, who gave Tracy addresses, were wearing seatbelts and the air bags in the pickup deployed. Both were taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, Stephen Bogetti with major injuries. Michael Bogetti received only minor injuries. The CHP noted that both Bogettis had been drinking alcoholic beverages, but neither was arrested. The obituaries for the father and daughter are listed elsewhere in this issue. 2nd crash on river: A second crash on River Road, near its intersection with Hamilton Road, occurred just over 12 hours later. Juan Jesus Lopez of Patterson was southbound shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle drifted off the right side of the roadway. The Chevrolet Blazer then ran across the east side and hit an almond tree and overturned. Lopez, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected. He received major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center. A short time later, about 6:35 a.m. Saturday, a 73-year-old Lemore woman and her 45-year-old son were killed when the Volvo station wagon she was driving ran off 1-5 and down a 150-foot embankment. Helping son move: Joanne Slater was helping her son Kent Slater move from the Sacramento area. Her southbound vehicle drifted onto the center divider, and when she over-corrected, it went off the west side of the roadway north of Del Puerto Canyon Road. The vehicle rolled over at least five times. Neither was wearing a seat belt and both were ejected. Both died at the scene.

Sutherland Robert 010724 p1

A Pine Box Fulfills Last Wish of a Patterson Man; by George Loewen Patterson Irrigator News Reporter Robert Sutherland always wanted to be buried in a pine box and his family wasn t about to let him down. He was laid to rest last week in the Winton Cemetery in a homemade pine coffin. It was right out of an old western, the kind he loved. "He wanted to be buried in a pine box," his daughter, Shirley Trio, said. "He was a big fan of Gunsmoke, the old TV series. Even as a kid, he said, ‘I want to be buried in a coffin like that on Gunsmoke. His dying wish was to have his sons and grandsons build him a coffin like those on Gunsmoke. It may have seemed like a crazy idea to family members, and they say they ve heard a lot of them. But no matter how offbeat or implausible they were, Sutherland s wishes were always carried out. "Everything he wanted, we carried out," Trio said. "Right down to the red suit he wore at Christmas. Red was his favorite color." For his burial, Sutherland was dressed in the red suit. With his boots on, as if he was ready to line dance with the angels. He also wanted everyone in red, his favorite color, instead of the traditional black or somber tones.

"He would always say ‘I don t care what anyone says. That s what I want done. So we did it," Jackie Basaldua, one of his granddaughters said. "Because Grandpa was so adamant, we were so adamant. That s how we got it done." Trio, who flew in from St. Louis on Wednesday; Basaldua; Dawn Buhler, another granddaughter; Mike Buhler. a grandson; and Domingo Basaldua, a friend of Sutherland s took about a day to build the coffin. They ended up with a diamond-shaped coffin, like in the Wild West. The wood was sanded and stained.

No frills: The inside was lined with padding and a mattress. There s a pillow to rest Sutherland s head on. Other than that, there are no frills. "He was a simple man. He didn t want anything fancy," Dawn Buhler said. Including the wood and padding, the coffin cost about $150 to build, Trio said. That reduced the overall cost of the funeral, as most coffins these days go for $4,000 or more. Family members don t want to be burdened with the cost of a new coffin, on top of dealing with the loss of a loved one. "Anyone can do this. The only rules are a person can t be cramped. He has to be relaxed," Trio said. "There can be any type of padding. It can t have any rough edges." It also has to be watertight and have seal locks. The finished coffin measured 78 inches long by 22 inches wide and 20 inches deep. Sutherland was less than six feet tall. "There were no objections from the funeral home or the cemetery," Trio said. "Just as long as he s comfortable and not cramped."

Cowboy boots: The coffin was taken to the funeral home in Merced on Thursday in the back of a pickup. Sutherland was then dressed in his cowboy boots and red suit and placed in his coffin. a reminder of what he had on earth. He was buried among his loved ones in the Winton Cemetery on Friday. It was an open casket service. "Most people do what they want when someone dies, not what the dying person wants." Trio said. "I don t know why more people don t do this. Sutherland died on Tuesday. The construction of his desired resting place began at about 6 am. Wednesday and got done at about 1 a.m. Thursday. "A lot of people came up to us on their evening walks and wondered. what we were doing," Trio said. Family members were just sending a little part of them selves with their father and grandfather.

Picture of coffin with the following captain next to the article: Daughters, granddaughters, grandsons and friends helped build this coffin for Robert Sutherland, who died last week. Completing the project were left to right: Jackie Basaldua, granddaughter; Shirley Trio, daughter; Dawn Buhler, granddaughter; Domingo Basaldua, friend: and Mike Buhler, grandson. Sutherland's last wish was to have his sons and grandsons build him a coffin like those on Gunsmoke. It was completed the day before his funeral.

"The left side tires straddled the center line and the other driver,Villanueva, saw the first driver," Malinke said. "So he had to take action." Arriola complained of pain, which may have been caused by the seat belt and air bag, according to Mahnke. The teenager was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment and released. Villanueva also suffered minor injuries; he was taken to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock for treatment and also released. Three passengers in Villanueva s car were killed: Javier Martinez, 38. It was not known as of Sunday afternoon if the person that did not have a seat belt on was ejected from the Ford Taurus. Arriola was driving at approximately 55 mph, which is the speed limit on Highway 33, while Villanueva was going 50 mph. There were no signs of alcohol or drugs on either driver. Ybarra Edwardo 010821 p1

Mother-Son Deaths Rock Grayson; A Grayson woman and her son were found stabbed Friday afternoon in what is believed to be a murder-suicide. Mark Copeland, a detective for the Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department, said the victims, found by a family member at the home in the 8500 block of Stakes Street, were identified as Edwardo Ybarra, 39, and his mother Leonarda Ybarra, 69. Edwardo Ybarra was a 1980 Patterson High School graduate who played in the school s football and track programs. Each was alive when found but died of their wounds. As the victims were transported to a Modesto hospital. Copeland was able to get a statement from Leonarda Ybarra. "She said she had passed out and she denied her son, Eddie, had done anything to her," he said. "She said she knew she wasn t feeling too good and that she hit her head. He and his mom were the only ones living at the house." Sharp object: It is believed Edwardo Ybarra stabbed his mother repeatedly with a sharp object and then stabbed himself. Doors of the home were barricaded with furniture on the inside and most of the windows were broken, also from the inside. Copeland confirmed Edwardo Ybarra had a long criminal history, but did not elaborate. Autopsies were performed late yesterday morning, Monday, according to Copeland. The results of the autopsies will not be available for several weeks. Just over two and a half years ago, a member of the same family was murdered. Robert Ybarra, 22, the son and brother of Friday s victims, was standing on Minnie Street when he was fatally shot on March 3, 1999. Three of four suspects were later arrested, with the fourth suspect still at large. Juan Manuel Alardin, 29 at the time of the shooting. and Jeffery Allen Muniz and Miguel Garcia, both then 25, were charged with the murder. Another suspect, Felipe Solorio, then 27, apparently went to Mexico after the shooting. Alardin was convicted of first degree murder four months ago, while Muniz, who lived in Grayson, and Garcia made deals with the county s district attorney s office and pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
