CALIFORNIA VITAL STATISTICS from 1857 to 1904
The Sacramento BEE began publication in 1857. News was hard to get in
those days and there were not many newspapers. Vital statistics columns,
therfore, carried news of births, deaths, and marriages, not only for
Sacramento County and the surrounding area, but from all over the country.
The State of California did not maintain vital records before 1904. As a
service to genealogists everywhere, the Genealogical Association of Sac-
ramento has taken on the task of extracting from microfilm copies of these
old newspapers these vital statistics. The data is recorded on 3 x 5 cards,
then typed on 8½ x 11 pages. When a year is completed, these pages are
bound together, and the cards are then filed in alphabetical order, along
with the cards of the other years. In that way, we have the information
filed both in alphabetical and chronological order. When we complete enou-
gh years to make a volume, we will begin publishing for distribution to
libraries, organizations and individuals. To date the following years have
been completed: 1857, 1859, 1863, 1865, 1872, 1873, 1878, 1880, 1881, 1882,
1884, 1891, 1892, and 1900.
