STANDARD 1909 - 1984
The first school building to tear the name STANDARD was erected in 1909 on five acres of land donated by Standard Oil Company for a school site. It was located approximately at the northwest corner of Manor Street and China Grade Loop Road (then called Oil Center Road).
In 1909 a two room building was constructed. It was surrounded on all sides by a wide veranda and topped by a cupola and a bell. The bell rope hung in the hallway between the two rooms, A favorite pastime of some students was to ring the bell when it wasn't supposed to be. The bell was rung regularly at 8:30 A.M., 9:00 A.M., and at 1:00 P.M. The sound could be heard two miles away from the school When Standard opened in 1909 the one building had no roof. The doors and windows were still to be put into place. Students brought their own food and water. They also walked...through any kind of weather and for several miles if they lived in WAITS, OILDALE'S first name.
Anita POWELL, Ken KYLE, and Keith MONTGOMERY were teaching at Standard School when they became instrumental in organizing the anniversary celebration in 1974 to celebrate seventy-five years of existence during which time Standard served the people of the community. The anniversary served as a time for reflection and the renewing of old acquaintances reliving memorable events. Bryce RATHBUN was an important source of inspiration to the committee. Also mentioned in the forward to the book, "Standard 1909-1984", published for the anniversary celebration, was the fact that sixty-two graduates of Standard had returned to work in various capacities within the district. Appreciation was extended to James KNIGHT, Johanna MUNN, Board of Trustees, Loyd's Plying Service, Rita SORENSON, Greg POWELL, Tom LEWIS, and nany, many others. Fortunately, Josephine KNOWLES had compiled a history of Standard School District. During the four years the committee prepared for the celebration great quantities of information was gathered, a rich heritage was documented for the future. Still missing are records for 1911, 1912, 1917, and 1920. In addition, written information and pictures, the book includes the names of students who graduated with each class.
