Qrytext: Earnest Flae MANSFIELD - November 1912 Tuesday evening
Death entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. B. MANSFIELD and took from them
their beloved son, Earnest, who had been in failing health for the past
three months. Death came as a result of a complication of diseases that
led up tp Bright's Disease. Earnest was born in Crescent City 7 years,
four months and 9 days ago, and up to the time of his death, with the exception
of one year spent in Southern Oregon, had known no home but that one in
this city. Until that fatal day last August when Death stamped him a victim,
there was no brighter nor loving little boy in Crescent City. He had just
started his second year in school and his fond parents were proud of the
future that his work bespoke for him. Today his place in a poppy home will
be made forever vacant, and there is no human loss that makes a home so
desolated as the losing of a child. We met the little fellow but a short
time ago when he was being hauled down the street in a go-cart by his father.
He was at that time thought to be improving, and, in fact, out of danger,
but the improvement was but temporary. The funeral services will be held
today at 2 p.m. at the family residence on Ninth street. The Argus extends
the sincere sympathy of a host of sorrowing friends to the parents and
other relatives in their great loss.

ObitText: Newspaper Obituary for Rebecca Elizabeth MOORE BRAY b.
Aug. 31, 1862, Wisconsin or Michigan, d. Dec. 20. 1896, Crescent City.
(Name of newspaper unknown, probably Del Norte Record) Died. Rebecca Elizabeth
BRAY. Rebecca E. BRAY, wife of R.D. BRAY, died suddenly last Sunday night,
December 20th, at 11o'clock, at their home on 6th and K streets in Crescent
City. She was seated by the stove in the sitting room at the time talking
with her husband, when suddenly she called in agonized tones for water.
Her husband quickly brought her a drink. She took one swallow and fell
to the floor unconscious. Mr. BRAY supposing that she had fainted, lifted
her from the floor and placing her upon a couch attempted to restore her
to consciousness. His efforts proved unavailing. Thoroughly alarmed he
hurried to a neighbor's for assistance and sent a messenger for a physician.
Returning home with kind neighbors every effort was made to restore the
unfortunate woman to consciousness, but it soon became apparent that she
was beyond human aid. The doctor upon his arrival soon confirmed their
terrible fears. Death had been instantaneous. Ever since the birth of their
last child, something over a year ago, Mrs. BRAY had been in feeble health,
and during the past month had complained of illness quite frequently, but
on the day of her death she seemed greatly improved, and on that very afternoon
had said to her sisters, Miss MOORE and Mrs. William HAMILTON, who visited
her, that she felt very much better. At five o'clock they left her in the
best of spirits, and went to their homes. She attended to her usual duties
after her sisters left and not once during the whole evening, up to the
time of her death, did she complain of pain or unusual illness. Her sudden
death has proven a terrible blow to the bereaved husband, and in this his
hour of grief the deepest sympathy of the community goes out to him and
to the motherless little ones. Rebecca Elizabeth BRAY was a daughter of
W.H. and Priscilla MOORE, both deceased, who came to Del Norte in 1874
and resided here up to the time of their deaths. She was born in Michigan
a little over 34 years ago and was one of a family of five children. In
1874 she came with her parents to Del Norte and in the fall of 1882 was
married to R.D. BRAY, engineer in the mills of Hobbs, Wall & Co. in
this place. Five children, the fruits of that union, survive her. The youngest
is but a babe in arms. Besides husband and children, Mrs. BRAY leaves two
sisters, Miss Jessie MOORE and Mrs. Wm. HAMILTON of Crescent City, and
three brothers, one of whom, Dale MOORE, resides in Crescent City. G.J.
MOORE, another brother, lives in Eureka, and there is a third brother in
Michigan - Ed. MOORE. The funeral took place from the Methodist Church
at 3 P.M. Wednesday. The church was filled to overflowing with sympathizing
friends. Rev. C.F. COY, the pastor, delivered an impressive sermon, and
held out to the bereaved ones the hope that beyond the grave through the
mercy of Him who died for men they might be reunited with the loved one
whom they mourned if they would but believe. A choir feelingly rendered
some appropriate selections, and the friends of the deceased having taken
one last look at her face, the march to the grave in Odd Fellows cemetery
was taken up. There, the mourning firends of her girlhood and womanhood
gathered round, all that was mortal of Rebecca Elizabeth BRAY was committed
to the dust. The deceased was a member of Rebekah Lodge, No. 96, and the
members of that order attended her funeral in a body.

ObitText: (Obituary for Maria R. VAUGHAN JONES, b. dec. 14, 1837,
Peoria, IL; d. June 6, 1926, Crescent City, Del Norte County, CA. Date
and source unknown, probably Del Norte Triplicate. Transcribed verbatim)
FALL FATAL FOR OLDEST SETTLER Mariah Vaughn JONES was born in Peoria, Ill.
December 14, 1837, and departed this life June the 6th, 1926, aged 88 years,
5 months, and 22 days. In 1852, she with her parents, in company with a
number of families from Illinois, crossed the plains by ox team and settled
near Oregon City, Oregon Among those making up the caravan was a young
man of sterling worth, with whom she became intimately aquainted on the
long journey across the prairie, and the boy and girl friendship thus begun
blossomed into a deeper affection that carried them to the altar in the
year following, and on September 25th, 1853, Miss Maria VAUGHAN became
the girl bride of Martin Van Buren JONES. Mr. and Mrs. JONES removed from
Oregon to Crescent City immediately following their marriage in the fall
of 1853, and were among the first settlers of this region. Conditions in
and around Crescent City were such, that less sturdy stock than that from
which these youthful pioneers were sprung, would have been discouraged
and returned home to their folks, but not so with these young trail blazers.
Though surrounded by an appalling wilderness in which creatures of the
wild still predominated, and where the Indian was little better than a
savage, they stayed to hue out of this primevial forest a home for themselves,
and to lay the foundations for a civilization that was destined to bless
all future generations. Mr. and Mrs. JONES, union was blessed with eight
children, five boys and three girls, all of whom were born in Crescent
City, and all survive their mother except two older boys, Charles and Cyrus,
who with their father preceeded her to the better land several years ago.
To add to the trials and hardships of her already burdened life, she was
left with this large growing family to care and provide for alone -- Mr.
JONES being taken from her in 1885, -- but as all who knew her can attest,
she proved equal to the task, and has given to the world a family that
is spoken of with honor wherever they have been known. Mrs. JONES had been
in poor health a long while, and through her children have importuned her
to give up her little home up on H Street and come and make her home with
them where she could be cared for in her declining years, she has persistantly
refused, and would not even allow any of them to stay with her, fearing
to be a burden upon them. The independence that was forded upon her at
the death of her dear husband, dominated her mind in all her later life.
She was happiest that way, and though her dear daughter, Mrs. ELLSWORTH
kept constant watch, and stood ready to provide very care, and to supply
every need, yet knowing her mother’s disposition and what she would like
most, she did not seek to break down those characteristics that had been
woven into her nature by those earlier years of self reliance, but wisely
refrained from any show of ministry that would cause Grandma to feel that
she was a burden in any way. Last Saturday morning, while making her way
from her bed to the kitchen using a chair to steady her tottering steps,
she fell and dislocated her hip. Finding it impossible to relocate the
bone with out the use of anasthetics they were applied and while under
their influence she slipped away from us. She leaves three sons, Quincy,
Martin and Walter, and three daughters, Mrs. Clara HENDERSON of Oregon,
Emma ELLSWORTH of this City, and Dolly RIDGLEY of Seattle Washington, besides
numerous grandchildren, one brother, Stuart VAUGHAN of McMinnville, Oregon,
and a host of relatives and friends bereaved by her loss. Mrs. JONES was
a great-great grandmother, being survived by several great-great grandchildren.

the Dodge Inn, at 2 p.m. April 24th, conducted by A.F.W. WALTERS. A large
concurse of relatives, friends and neighbors being present and many floral
pieces spoke in the high esteem of the deceased. The Scripture of Revelations
2:10 was taken as a foundation of the funeral address. In illustration
of the life Darius Maples CASE, faithfulness, to life's great responsibilities
was truly exemplified, a trustworthy servant indeed. Born in Penn. Dec.
30, 1840, moved to Iowa, where he met Mrs. Elizabeth TAYLOR to whom he
was happily married, more than fifty years ago. A resident of Iowa nearly
all his life, till two years ago last Oct. when he came to Crescent City.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a dearly devoted widow and one son, Elwin
CASE, whom most of the citizens know, besides one brother in Indiana, and
one sister in Iowa. In the past D. M. CASE was a member of the Baptist
Church and while he was in his late years not identified with any church,
yet he could say that his faith was in Christ, as the Saviour of our World.
It was last Christmas that he replighted his marriage vow on the ocassion
of his Golden Wedding; it was indeed a beautiful sight to have the honor
of seeing him delight in that event, surrounded by so many and close friends;
his indeed was the faithfulness that honors and contributes to the divine
ideal of the home, that makes a noble citizenship. A.F.W. Walters P.C.
