SURNAMES: SARTAIN
I'm looking for past relatives that came to Tehama County in the late 1800's. First name
David, middle name Eldridge, last name SARTAIN. He came to California with a wife Sarah E.
Kivett, and two children; son James Henry and daughter Aveta Loga. They divorced in Colusa
County. David remarries Hattie Black of Tehama County in Colusa County. They move to
Tehama County. Hattie dies December 24, 1884. David marries a third time to Annie
Wyancoup, Dec. 8, 1891. I don't know if he had anymore children, but he remarries a fourth
time to an Emma. Another relative which came with David, is James Madison Sartain,
and wife Lucy. They brought with them possibly 3 children; Thomas Jefferson, Louella, and
John W. Lucy died, possibly in Tehama County, November 4, 1884. She's buried in Colusa
County. John W.(age 7 yrs old) is also buried in Colusa. James remarried Margaret Griffey
in Colusa and they moved to Tehama County. It looks as though they had twins, James D.,
and Adda Belle born Jan 1886. David Sartain's son James Henry marries a Jeannie. I
don't know if they had children. James Madison Sartain's son Thomas Jefferson marries
Edith E. and has two daughters; Hazel D., Jessie E., as well as a son Thomas M. If there
is any decendents of any of these people, they are possibly related to my Great Great
Grandfather Wright Sartain of Missouri or his
brother David Sartain, also of Missouri.

SURNAMES: FORD
I am looking for John Ford born in 1870. He and his wife Maryann Louise Henderson (b.1865)
moved to California in 1895. I am not sure which county they lived in but I know it
was northern California. I think it was near Red Bluff which is in Tehama County.
Their daughter Frankie Marie Ford was born on the way to California in the New Mexico
Territory. She had older and younger siblings. Frankie was a VERY intelligent woman.
She told me that her father was from Freeport Louisanna. There is no such place. She said
her mother was born in Macon or Atlanta, Georgia. I can't find her either. Frankie
would have remembered it as they told her so I have to think they might have been hiding
something.
I know John Ford was a one armed trapper and they did not live in town.

SURNAMES: ZELENY
Joseph Zeleny moved to the area of Red Bluff, California sometime during the period,
1911-1921. Prior to that, he and his family were living in Garfield County, Oklahoma. I do
not know the reason for his migration to the Tehama County area, but I have been told he
left the area due to a real estate deal gone bad. He then moved east again and settled at
Artesia, NM in 1922. I know some of the Zeleny family remained in California near
the area of Paradise, CA. Lydia Zeleny Cleland lived at Paradise, CA in the 1970's.
I'm very interested in connecting with the family and receiving important ancestral
information.
I would appreciate the assistance of anyone, especially from those living in the Tehama
County area.

SURNAMES: ZELENY
JOSEPH ZELENY was born in Moravia in 1859. He immigrated to the USA in 1881. He
lived in Nebraska, and Oklahoma prior to moving to Tehama County, CA He was supposed to
have lived near Red Bluff, CA I know he was living at Garfield County, OK in 1910.
The 1910 Census listed him as living in the Blaine township, in Garfield,County,OK.
I also know from his death certificate that he was a resident of Eddy County, New Mexico
in 1922. I have a gap in time between 1910 and 1922.
I'm trying to locate information about him and his family while living in Tehama County.
I have been told he had some bad real estate dealings and lost a large sum of money while
he was in CA. I think that is why he headed east again and settled at Artesia, NM in 1922.
I would appreciate any assistance with information about him and where he may have lived
while in CA. He may be listed on the 1920 Census for Tehama County.

SURNAMES: CLARK, RODRIGUEZ or RODRIGUES
My great grandfarther, Andrew Jackson Clark, born September 16, 1827, moved to
Tehama County as a young man. He married Perminia Rodriguez (or Rodrigues) in Tehama
County and their four children were born there. The four children were: Claude Clark
(b.8-13-82), Galen Clark (b. 5-6-85), Homer Clark (b. 1880, died as a child), and Grace
Arline Clark (b. 12-15-89). I know that Perminia (called Minnie) was from that area and
both Minnie and Andrew are buried in Tehama County. My grandfather (Claude) was orphaned
at around eight or nine years old which means one or both of his parents died around 1890.
Grace was a very small child when she was adopted by a couple with the last name of
Cowles. I don't know if they were originally from that area or not, but I do know Grace
was raised in Washington state.
Andrew Jackson Clark's parents were Isaac Johnston Clark, born March 20, 1953, and Mary
Jane Finch or Fincher Clark. I do not know if they ever made it as far as California but
it is possible that they, too, lived in Tehama County. I would appreciate any help
anyone can give me. Galen J. Hogan

SURNAMES: MOSES
I am trying to locate the burial site of my great, great grandparents, Alfred and
Catherine Moses. They are thought to be buried at or near Tehama. A genealogy compiled in
the 1930s and 1940s by Dr. Howard Moses (b. 1873) of Salina, Kansas records this
information:
ALFRED or ALFORD (8) MOSES, son of Reuben
Early life spent at Cuba, N.Y. His father having come from Lima, N.Y., also

1910
Lucretia Elizabeth b.Sep.24,1847 d.Feb. 6,1925
Charles H. b.Feb. 1,1852
Alfred Moses is found in the 1850 Census of Boone County, Illinois. His son Henry
Derwin was my great grandfather. Alfred migrated to Tehama, California around 1860. Did
his wife and younger children accompany him? The above records the year of his death as
1895. Another source states 1885.
In 1983 I visited a library in Red Bluff. A helpful attendant located Alfred Moses' name
and a paragraph about him in a book that listed some of the early citizens of Tehama. This
book was written in the 1940's by a former post-mistress in Tehama County. I made a Xerox
copy of this paragraph but now find it missing among my papers. It said that Alfred was a
drayman and that he was associated with the post office. I also recall a passage that said
that he died in 1885 "and
now sleeps under the stars in the Tehama cemetery." I have written to the Tehama
County Library asking for another copy or any record of Alfred and Catherine Moses.
I drove to a cemetery near Tehama. It had a large white timbered arch over the entrance.
No grave marker and no record of Alfred Moses is known at that site. Could there be other
cemeteries near Tehama where Alfred and Catherine Moses are buried? Any help appreciated.

SURNAMES: CURRY, SIPERLY, STREETER
Martha Ellen Streeter was born 01 June 1873 in Red Bluff, Tehama, Ca. I
have found no record of her birth. Her father may have been Samuel Edward Streeter
or Albert Streeter. She was somehow related to the Curry family who also had a
Tehama connection. Lillie Alice Siperly was born March 1864 in Butte Co. and married
Charles Forrest Curry 05 Oct. 1891 in San Francisco. The Curry family cared
for Martha three daughters after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. What records
in Tehama might help me find her. (I searched the newspaper records and the Great
Register at the library in Red Bluff on a weekend.) I haven't been able to visit on
a weekday when the county records office is open. My visits need to be short so I need to
know ahead of time exactly what and where to search. Thank you.

SURNAMES: NORTON, BESSESEN, HILDRETH, VAN DUSEN, SMITH
I am seeking info about Myrtle (Violet?) NORTON, married to Dan NORTON. She is known to
have had address Red Bluff in the mid- or early 1960es. In particular: Descendants? And
did Myrtle (Violet?) and Dan perhaps move to another place later on?
Background: Myrtle (Violet?) was daughter of Barbara Larsdatter, born 1866 in Sortland,
Norway, emigrating in 1886 together with her first husband Sjur BESSESEN who died early.
Myrtle (Violet?) was a daughter from Barbara's second or third marriage, to HILDRETH or
VAN DUSEN (first names unknown to me). Myrtle (Violet?) was probably born in the late
1890es or after the turn of the century. According to hearsay she also used surname
SMITH at some time (before marrying Dan). Thank you so much in advance.

SURNAMES: BRANNAN, HICKMAN, PATTERSON, SHACKELFORD, TABER
On 1 Sep 1875, George B. TABER, b. 6 Feb 1838, IL, d. 13 Sep 1881, Paynes Creek, Tehama
Co., CA, m. Amelia SHACKELFORD, b. 30 May 1848, MO, d. 28 Aug 1919, Antelope (Red
Bluff) Tehama Co., CA. How did George die? I have searched the Red
Bluff weekly newspapers after his death and cannot find how. If anyone has
access to the daily newpapers, perhaps it would be mentioned. I would really
like to find out how George TABER died so young (only 43) ?
Amelia married 2nd Edmond (Edward or "Hing") BRANNAN, 19 Jul 1898 in Red Bluff.
There is a second record of marriage in Shasta Co, same persons, 2 months earlier.
On the 2 Jul 1900 US Census, Amelia BRANNAN is listed in Red Bluff with two sons.
She is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery as "Amelia TABER" with her mother,
Lucy (HICKMAN) SHACKELFORD PATTERSON and Amelia's brothers and other family members.
She is not buried with her 1st husband George TABER, nor with Edmund BRANNAN.
In fact, I have not been able to find any further record of BRANNAN. The one
thing I have not checked is the divorce records, if anyone has an opportunity to look at
that index. Can anyone tell me what happended to BRANNAN?
Thank you, Phoebe Larne

SURNAMES: BARRETT, SCRUBY
I am interested in BARRETT and SCRUBY surnames in Red Bluff, Tehama County. According to
the "Pioneer Register" Clifford Gerard Barrett, b. 1853 in Ohio, was a
dentist in Red Bluff in 1885. He also had a son, Earl Gerard Barrett (my grandfather) born
9-1-1885 in Red Bluff. I would like to find out when and where he died, and when and if he
divorced his wife, Emily Caroline Scruby (b.1850 in Wisconsin and d. 1932 in Red Bluff).
The reason I am confused about this is that the 1920 census lists Emily C. Barrett as
being a widow, yet there is a Clifford G. Barrett listed as a dentist in Eureka in both
the 1900 and 1920 censuses. He had also remarried by 1900. If anyone can shed
any light on this problem, I'd appreciate it.

SURNAMES: BRINK, SCOTT
I am trying to trace the whereabouts of my father's first wife, Bertie Scott or Brink
after they divorced in 1924. She supposedly came to Calif. and worked in the cherry
orchards. I recently found out there were cherry orchards in Shasta, Tehama, Butte and
Glenn Counties during the 1920's. Would you know if there are records available of the
immigrants and/or employees who worked in these orchards at that time? A little
information about Bertie: I think she was born Berthena Marie Scott, born March 1897 in
Arkansas and married my father Walter Henry Brink in 1913, in Henryetta, Okla. and
divorced in 1924. She may have remarried out here and the royal gilch is I have no clue as
to whom she married or her last name. She died around 1930. I would appreciate any
information that you could pass on to me. Annie Bauman
