| Notes: Kyburz did not come west with Sutter, and as indicated from other sources, his birthday was 26 June 1810.

Good, truthful and brainy old Samuel Kyburz lives only in the history he has made. Last Saturday, at the home of his son Samuel, in Shingle Springs, he laid down the burden of his eventful life and was at rest. Born in Swizerland (spelled as in the obit) 87 years ago the 20th day of last June, he brought with him to America the Stalwart manhood and sturdy virtues of his Alpine home. In 1846 he came with Sutter to California and was for many years thereafter, his confidential adviser and all 'round business manager. It was in this relation and capacity that he made the preliminary explorations for a mill site at or near the place where gold was discovered. Upon his report and following his advice, Sutter entered into a contract with Marshall to build the mill. Of this contract Kyburz was the inspiring genius and a subscribing witness and subject to its terms. Marshall went with his outfit to the place indicated. It was the site of the old Sutter Mill, at which gold was discovered. The rest is monumental history, which will be found in our Jubilee edition, together with fine pictures of Sutter, Marshall and Kyburz; and of these three the last is a foremost figure in the life and destiny of El Dorado County. In the early fifties he followed merchanising in Sacramento and San Francisco. Thereafter he came to Clarksville in this County, where he followed farming and stock raising to the end of his life. He was for several years a Justice of the Peace and a good man in every relation of life. He leaves three sons, Samuel E., Albert and Daniel, all residents of this County, and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Kent, of Oakland, to inherit the land of which he was pioneer of pioneers. Mrs. R.J. Roberts of this city is one of his grand-children, of whom and the three little great-grand-children, he was very fond. His remains were interred at Folsom under the austices the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was an honored member. |
