HIX/HICKS/HECKS, CHASE
I am looking for references to my ancestors who were in White Oak Springs Township, El Dorado County, California from about 1850 until about 1868. Thaddeus Constantine Hix came to El Dorado in about 1850 from Illinois. He ran the New York House Inn in White Oak Springs. Ezra and Tirzah Chase came from Utah Territory with their children. Their daughter, Charlotte Chase married T.C. Hix. He went by the name Constantine. His census entries for 1850 and 1860 are under that name.

Recently I read a small page about him in a book entitled, "Early California Inns" by Ralph A. Cross. It contained some interesting information concerning criminal activities. The footnotes led to letters sent to this Ralph Cross. I am wondering if anyone has access to the papers of Ralph Cross, or knows of a library or historical society which might have them. I am very curious to know if this great great great grandpa was a rogue or not. Supposedly, he fell from a horse and did internal damage which caused him to die of pneumonia in 1868. His family had already returned to Utah by then. He was with a friend Tyrus W. Hurd at the time of his death.
