Portraits of Pioneers Abraham Parker "Uncle Abe" advertised himself as "the pioneer blacksmith of Owens Valley" in the early '70's; his claim was undisputed, so may be accepted as valid. In Tuolumne County, where he lived before coming to Inyo, he was popular to a degree that was remembered long after. When he cast his lot with Inyo is indefinite, but in the record of Republican convention held in Ben City (where Citrus now is), in May 1864, we find that he was nominated for Treasurer. At that time the creation of Coso County was in view. The legislative authority had been obtained. For some reason no election was held, and the proposed county went by default. Uncle Abe continued blacksmithing at Independence until his death.
