Amy Hughes 1937-2004 Memorial services will be held at the Science of Mind Church, 129 E. Line St., Bishop on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. The Reverend Freda Lindsay will officiate. Amelia Maud Hughes was born the fourth of five children in Liverpool, England on Feb. 11, 1937. She died on Oct. 20, 2004 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev. following an accident. After marriage and childbirth she moved to southern California on Nov. 22, 1963. She worked as an office manager, administrator of a business in the import- export of glass and metal and a realtor in Carpentaria, Calif. She moved to Bishop in 1987 where shoe worked for Inyo County Social Services until her retirement. Amy was very well-read, enjoyed keeping a wonderfully manicured garden and sailing from the Redondo Beach marina. She enjoyed all the new experiences that life had to offer. In her short retirement, she found a love of hiking in the Sierra with her dog Maggie and friends. She volunteered her time to the Ombudsman organization, helping seniors with their financial difficulties, and each year she prepared income taxes at the Senior Center. Amy was very dedicated to her church. She was the treasure and administrator for the Church of Religious Science for five years. She was always available to help out whether it was babysitting furry friends, selling at the swap meet (she was always one of the people that packed everything when it was over), going to the store, driving a friend or just lending a caring ear. Amy was a pet rescuer, and above all else, a good friend. Amelia is survived by her daughter, Lesley Hughes-Blanco of Mammoth Lakes; sister, Pauline Divine of Whittier; brother, Joe Bennett of England; sisters, Josie Bennett and Doris Abbott of England as well as many nieces and nephews in England and the U.S. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Amelia M. Hughes may be made to the Abounding Love Ministries Foster Care Fund, PO Box 1104, Bishop, CA 93615, or to the Church of Religious Science.
