Bernie Shaw 1938 - 2003 Funeral services for 18-year Big Pine resident Bernie Shaw, 64, will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Brune and Buck Mortuary Chapel at 11 a.m. Pastor Steve Sperry of The Neighborhood Church and the United States Air Force Honor Guard from March Air Force Base will officiate. Additionally, a reception will be held at the Bishop United Methodist Center at 205 N. Fowler St. in Bishop, following the service. Born in Portland, Ore. On May 14, 1938, Mr. Shaw died on May 8, 2003 at his home in Big Pine. He served in the United States Air Force from 1958-78, was stationed in Vietnam, and retired from the Air Force after 20 years. He was also a probation officer for Inyo County for 18 years. Bernie loved the Sierra and the valley floor. His main goal was to help as many kids as he could to have a better life for themselves. "He worked very hard at turning their lives around," his family said. It was important to him, and it made him proud to see kids change and succeed in their lives. He will be greatly missed. Bernie is survived by his wife, June D. Shaw of Big Pine; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Tina Shaw of Ridgecrest; daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Ed Barney of Merced; mother, Audrey Shaw of Roseburg, Ore., sister, Janice Hunt and husband, Richard, of Sacramento; grandchildren, Anthony and Lacey Shaw, Nicole and Matthew Barney, Katrina Sanger, and Cheryl Sweeney; one great-grandchild, Evan Sweeney; nieces, Jannie Baumann and Debbie McGovern; and nephews, Jon and Jim Hunt, and George David and Steve Moorhead. Donations may be made to the donator's favorite charity in Mr. Shaw's memory. Private interment will be at the Big Pine Cemetery.
