Dora Catherine Thomas Funeral services for Dora Catherine Thomas, 97, former resident of Bishop, were held Friday in Reno, Nev. She died Jan. 14, 2003 at Physicians Hospital for Extended Care in Reno. A private interment will take place in Mt. Whitney Cemetery in Lone Pine. A native of New Truston, Mo., she was born April 2, 1905 the youngest child of James and Sarah Annie Young Fine. At age 18, Dora married Asbury McCann. Their union produced her only child, a daughter, Merle. In 1949 she married Parker Leroy Thomas. Their marriage endured for 36 years. He died in 1985. Over the course of her lifetime, Dora lived in many places and worked at a variety of jobs, most notably in a defense plant during World War II, and subsequently as a seamstress for a good part of her life. During her 70s, Dora took up painting, even taking classes, and became very accomplished, producing 88 works of art. She had a penchant for gardening and loved flowers. Dora lived in Bishop for several years before moving to Reno in 1999 to be near her daughter. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Merle and Richard Simons; two grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and three stepdaughters.
