Dr. Morris M. Zack Dr. Morris M. Zack, 90, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 in the San Francisco Bay area city of Redwood Shores, after a brief illness. His last few days were spent at home surrounded by family. Born in Denver, Colo., Dr. Zack moved to Los Angeles and was a graduate of Stanford University. He earned his medical degree in 1944 at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Zack was a captain in the Army, having served as a surgeon in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He began his successful orthopedic medical practice shortly thereafter in Los Angeles, and moved his family to the Owens Valley in 1971, where he practiced at Northern Inyo Hospital. He enjoyed a second career as a farmer in Hammil Valley, tilling and nurturing the land on what was to become Zack Brothers Ranch. Dr. Zack is remembered as a loving husband and father, a leader in the small ranching community. He was active as a member of the Mono County Planning Commission in the '70s. It has be said that Dr. Zack provided sage advice to those whom he was close, dispensing encouragement with a twinkle in his eye and a hearty laugh. At times he provided free medical assistance to the citizens up and down the valley, easing their troubles with calm nerves and a warm heart. He leaves behind many friends who have been touched by his compassion and intellect.
