Dr. Myron 'Mike' Hesse Dr. Myron "Mike" Hesse, a resident of Rancho Bernardo since 1974, died May 12, and in respect of his wishes, no services were held. Although his education and career took him to other places, his roots were in the Owens Valley, and he returned often to reunions of friends and former students. "Mike," as he liked to be known, began his professional career in public education in 1936 at Santa Barbara Junior High and then served as superintendent of Owens Valley Unified School District. He was called to serve the government as curriculum director and vice principal of the high school at Manzanar Relocation Center from its inception in 1942, until he went into the U.S. Navy as an officer in World War II. After the war, he continued to advance in the field of education until his retirement. Mr. Hesse had a long record of public service, serving as president of several organization, including California Association of School Business Officials, Glendale Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, and Rotary Club; appointment to the California Council on Criminal Justice, Reagan's advisory board for the White House Conference on Aging, and election to the San Diego County UCAN utility commission. Survivors include his wife, Myrna; two children, Nick Hesse of Concord, and Hita Allen of Poway; four grandchildren; and nephew, Gary Lake of Bishop.
