Elva Mae Borrill Death Reported Big Pine – Word was received of the death of Elva Mae Smith Borrill in Escondido July 22. Mae Smith, as she was known by her many friends in Owens Valley arrived in Big Pine in 1896 at the age of 9 with her parents, James F. and Martha Smith. She was born in Reed City, Mich., August 6, 1887. Her brothers Ed, Jim and Al Smith were all well-known in Big Pine as were her sisters, Emma Tracy, Eva Miles and Lan (Marm) Mendenhall. Mae was proud of her Big Pine grammar school diploma, which is dated June 16, 1901 and is signed by Principal Mrs. N. Clarke and by the president of the board, J. H. Shannon. Mae left Big Pine for San Diego in 1908 at the age of 21. She is survived by her husband, William Borrill of Escondido and 15 nephews and nieces, many of them former Big Pine residents.
