Frances Corine Hughes Memorial services will be held for 32-year Cartago resident Frances Corine Hughes, 87, at a later date in this area. Born in Garrison, Miss., Mrs. Hughes died on Dec. 13, 2002. Corine, as she liked to be called, lived with her husband, William "Bill" Hughes, in Cartago for 32 years, after retiring from West Los Angeles. A retired businesswoman in Southern California, and a Baptist Church member, she joined the Rotarians of Venice Marina and, after moving here, she became a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club in Ridgecrest. In addition, she served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Cartago Water Company for many years. She did the paperwork to obtain U.S. and California grants and loans to enable the Water Company to construct and maintain a new water system for Cartago. Corine liked to camp and fish in the Sierra. She was a captain in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol, and an Air Search and Rescue observer for more than 200 hours of aircraft time. She was a trained radio communication officer and put in more than 400 hours in that capacity. She was the financial officer for her group and squadron in the Civil Air Patrol. Corine also enjoyed private aircraft. She had been to Mexico, Alaska, Canada, the Hawaiian Islands and the Caribbean Islands. She had visited 46 of the lower 48 states. "Corine was a wonderful homemaker and cook," her husband said. "Most of all, she was my partner and sweetheart for a long time. She surely will be missed." She is survived by her husband, William Hughes, daughter, Donna, daughter, Billie Ruth, daughter, Linda; son, John; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
