Death Takes Former Mono Basin Resident Funeral services were held in Loyalton, Jan. 14, for Fred P. Alpers, 73, who died the previous Thursday at his ranch near Sierraville following a heart attack after a business trip to Reno. Born in Hanover, Germany, he came to this country 57 years ago and for many years operated a cattle ranch in the Owens Valley until 1930 at which time he sold his holdings to the City of Los Angeles. Subsequently he purchased a large ranch in the Sierra Valley and moved his purebred Hereford herd to the newly acquired properties. In addition to the Sierra Valley and Mono properties he also owned and operated two other ranches, one near Marysville and one near Oroville. The deceased leaved his wife, his daughters Mrs. Elsie Crouch of Yuba City, Mrs. Margaret Hosner of Bishop, Mrs. Martha Ohland of Yuba City and Mrs. George Burke of Loyalton; his sons, Carl of Loyalton, Earnest of Smith Valley, Nev., and William and Frank Alpers of Los Angeles.
