Hattiebelle (Hattie) Brockman Private memorial services will be held for Hattiebelle Brockman, who died Oct. 15, at the age of 92. One of seven children, Mrs. Brockman was born in Point Richmond, CA., on Sept. 22, 1905, where her father worked at the Standard Oil Refinery. A second generation Californian, she was born just seven months prior to the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. In 1927 she bravely boarded the train to take a teaching job at the grammar school in west Bishop, where she had never been and knew no one. The last part of her journey was aboard the Slim Princess, where the engineer stopped the train to shoot a pheasant. She met Arthur Brockman and they were married in 1928. Many longtime residents will remember Mrs. Brockman working behind the counter at Brockman's Corner gas station and market. She was friendly and enjoyed visiting with the customers. Mr. Brockman died in 1958. Mrs. Brockman married Tom Potts in 1965, who taught her to fish at Crowley Lake, and they took many wonderful fishing trips to northern CA, OR, and elsewhere around the country. They made their home in Vista, CA. Mr. Potts died in 1985. Mrs. Brockman is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Peggy Brockman of Bishop; daughter Helen Tracy of Portland, OR; six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew. She loved her family and will be dearly missed by both family and friends.
