Joe L. Miller Graveside funeral services for 83-year Owens Valley resident Joe L. Miller, 90, were held on Friday, Jan. 10, at the West Line Street Cemetery. Reverend Steve Sperry officiated. Born in Seville, Ohio on May 4, 1912, Mr. Miller died on Jan. 5, 2003 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. Joe worked for the Post Office for 37 years, more than 20 of which were as Postmaster, a post he retired from in 1970. He was a World War II Naval veteran and a lifetime member of the American Legion, receiving his 50-year pin in 1994. In February of 1961, he was honored as "Man of the Year" for his outstanding work in scouting during the past years. Joe was an avid skier, skiing at Mammoth before there was a Mammoth Mountain, pre-World War II. He loved fly fishing the Gorge before Pleasant Valley Dam. In later years he enjoyed photography and rock hounding. Even though he wasn't a true native, he loved the Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra.
