John Juel McTevia Honoring his request, no services will be held for longtime Independence resident John Juel McTevia, 80. Born July 25, 1922 in Dallas, Tex., to Charles D. and Mary Wilkinson McTevia, Mr. McTevia died on Nov. 17, 2002, at Southern Inyo Hospital. John's family moved to California when John was a young child, settling in Long Beach and moving several times around Southern California. In December of 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army, where he served as a radio operator in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and received various medals and ribbons and an Honorable Discharge in February of 1946. Following World War II, John worked as a carpenter, and in 1951 he met Merlene Hill in Fillmore, Calif. and they were married on Dec. 29, 1951 in Yuma, Aariz. and started their family. In 1967, they moved to the Owens Valley and John worked for the Department of Water and Power, retiring in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Merlene of Independence; sons, Greg and wife Wanda McTevia of Bishop, and Lindsay McTevia of Indiana; and a sister, Doris Trinkaus of Pasadena.
