Joseph Anthony Schlapp Bishop Elks Lodge No. 1603, of which he was an honorary life member, will conduct funeral rites at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, for Joseph Anthony Schlapp, 79, who passed away May 26 at Northern Inyo hospital, following a lingering illness. Interment will be private. Mr. Schlapp was born Oct. 12, 1900 in New York City. He had been a building contractor for 42 years, most of which he spent in Owens Valley. He had built the Josephs buildings in Lone Pine and Bishop, the Ellis Motors Bldg., the Lone Pine and Bishop Libraries, Dept. of Water and Power homes in Independence, Fish Springs trout hatchery buildings, and scores of others in later years. He had served on many boards of directors, including the Elks Lodge, and Bishop Creek Water Association. He had helped many young people get started in business, or acquire a home. At one time the Schlapps operated Home Furnishings, 269 N. Main, where Sierra hardware is now located in downtown Bishop. The Schlapps had secured the business from Ed and Maire Moriarry. Mr. Schlapp is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Bishop; daughter Marian Goldstein of Rhode Island; two sisters, Madeline Horner of Rancho Bernardo and Margaret Zellers of Riverside; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
