Kaarin (Friberg) Hays Services were held Nov. 23, 2002 for former Bishop resident Kaarin (Friberg) Hays, 70, at Burton W. Chace Park in Marina Del Ray. Born Sept. 9, 1932 in Bishop, Mrs. Hays died on Nov. 6, 2002 after a battle with cancer. Kaarin was an artist, skier, outdoor enthusiast, avid reader and intellectual thinker, but her great loves were being an accomplished sailor and her commitment to the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Search & Rescue. She was a crew member aboard the 78 ft. schooner Queen Mab on many Los Angeles to Ensenada/Mazatlan races, and two Los Angeles to Hawaii Trans Pacific Yacht races in 1967 to 1969. She raced off shore race boats in POPBRA, handled communications for a number of Hennessey Cup Races and owned the Mercury boat dealership Aqua Marine, in Culver City. Kaarin was an active Coast Guard Auxiliary member for more than 30 years. She was a commander of a Flotilla 42 and operations officer in 1998, 1999 and 2000. She is survived by children, Toni Saarinen-Jorden, Kit Hay and Bill Hays; two grandchildren, Evan and Eliot Saarinen, son-in-law, Alex Jorden and close friend and companion, Olin K. "Smitty" Smith. "She faced this last challenge with dignity and tremendous courage," her family said.
