Kenneth William Steward 1913-2004 A private memorial service will be held for Big Pine resident Kenneth William Steward. Ken was born in Big Pine on June 1, 1913 to Kate and Bill Steward and died on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004 at Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine. He was the grandson of two Big Pine pioneer families, Detriech and Henrietta Bartels and James and Anna Steward. Ken’s grandfather, James B. Steward settled in what would later become the community of Big Pine in 1862. Ken spent his early adult years working as a member of the family’s resort and sheep business in the valley and mountains of the Big Pine area. He spent his remaining 55 years working in the hay and cattle business while living on his 4-S Ranch east of Big Pine. Ken was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Bishop Elks Lodge for 57 years, served as a Big Pine School Board Member for 12 years, participated in the Big Pine Christmas Tree Committee for 20 years, supported the Big Pine Civic Club and was a charter member of the Inyo-Mono Soil Conservation District. Ken is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elaine; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Cathy; grandchildren, Mike, Jason, and Katie; great-granddaughter, Jae-Lyn of Reno, Nev.; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Jane; granddaughters, Megan and Sheena of Big Pine.
