Lawrence (Larry) William Armstrong 1914-2003 Memorial services will be held for Lone Pine resident Lawrence "Larry" William Armstrong on Saturday, April 19, at the Trinity Church in Lone Pine at 2 p.m. Born in Quebec, Canada, on April 29, 1914, Mr. Armstrong died on April 5, 2003, at his home in Lone Pine. Larry was born to Thomas William and Myrtle Mastine Armstrong on his family's farm i n Quebec, the second of six children. He joined the Royal Highland Regiment Canadian Black Watch on Sept. 9, 1939 and shipped out to England in August, 1940. He returned to Canada on June 11, 1945, where he met and married Irene, his wife of 57 years. The couple honeymooned at St. Anne's Military Hospital, where he underwent spinal surgery to repair a war injury. The couple acquired and operated the family farm until 1959, when Larry fulfilled his lifelong dream and moved his family to California. They resided in Southern California until 1969 when the couple purchased Little Lake Hotel, which they operated for several years before finally settling in Lone Pine. Larry loved the area and spent many happy hours exploring the terrain as a member of the gem club. He delighted every child he knew by filling their pockets with the rocks he polished. "Generations to come will surely treasure grandpa's gifts to them," his family said. Larry was preceded in death by daughter, Pat Armstrong, in 1974. He is survived by wife, Irene of Lone Pine; son, Dan Armstrong of Ridgecrest; son, Paul Armstrong of Lancaster; son, Peter Armstrong of Quebec; son, Jeff Harris of San Francisco; daughter, Loreen Armstrong of Round Valley; daughter Lucy Chappell of Temecula; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the Pat Armstrong Memorial Scholarship Fund through the El Dorado Savings Bank in Lone Pine or the Trinity Church Narthex Improvement Fund.
