Leland Varney Funeral services were held the afternoon of May 24 in Lodi for Leland C. Varney, son of a pioneer Inyo-Mono family, following his death May 21 in Reno, Nev. He was 81. The Rev. Vernon Robertson of Grace Presbyterian Church conducted the service in the Gierhart and Wells Funeral Home chapel. Sacred songs "How Great Thou Art" and "Abide with Me." Earl Johnson, acting master of Lodi Lodge 256, F&AM, conducted at Masonic graveside service at Lodi Memorial cemetery. Mr. Varney was born May 6, 1889, in Round Valley, the son of Edwin C. and Millie Hilton Varney. He was the grandson of Richard and Rachel Hilton, for whom Hilton Creek and Hilton Lakes were named. After selling his ranch to the City of Los Angeles in 1922, Mr. Varney settled in Lodi where he spent many years ranching. Following his retirement, he returned to Bishop where he settled on Mt. View Drive until health problems forced him to move in 1969. He and his wife were en route to Bishop at the time of his d eath. He is survived by his wife. Elsie Boyd Varney; one daughter, Janice Roberts, Stockton; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lodi. Pallbearers were Victor Colvin, D. W. Davis, Eugene Neuharth, Richard Newharth, Cleo Curry and Dean Curry.
