Verna "Nan" Hatfield 1915-2003 Honoring her request, no service will be held for longtime Cartago resident Verna "Nan" Hatfield, 78. Born to Hyrum and Birdie Sheets Bull in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 24, 1915, Mrs. Hatfield died on Feb. 26, 2003 at Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine. Verna attended Salt Lake City schools and graduated from West High School in 1931. Later she moved to California and worked for Lockheed during World War II. She met and married Harry Emerson Hatfield. The couple moved to Cartago when the bought the Sportsman Lodge, and they operated it for 40 years. The couple had no children. She was preceded in death by husband Harry in 1988. Nan is survived by many friends, including her dearest lifelong friend, Maxine Schmidt of Camarillo. She will be missed by Norma and Ward Swadley of Cartago; Gary and Sue Stoutenberg of Bishop; and Marlene Ciernak of Lone Pine.
