Virginia Holmes 1923-2004 Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bishop for longtime Bishop resident Virginia Holmes. Born Aug. 14, 1923 in Los Angeles, Virginia died peacefully at her home on Sept. 28, 2004. Virginia attended school in Los Angeles ad at the age of 17 was accepted to the University of Southern California. It was there that she majored in elementary education and minored in theater arts. She graduated from USC in 1945. She met her husband, Gordon, that same year and they were married in Las Vegas on Feb. 14, 1946. The couple lived in Southern California until 1951 when Gordon wanted out of the congested L.A. area and was able to find a job with California Electric Company and they moved to Lee Vining. After a year, Gordon was transferred to Plant 2 at Bishop Creek. After the children were all in school, Virginia began teaching in the elementary grades in Bishop. She also was active in the Bishop Country Club and in the mid-'50s she worked part-time at KIBS. She had two regular programs: "Coffee With Virginia" in the morning and an afternoon program called "Aunt Happy" that featured local children on their birthdays. In 1980, Virginia moved back to Southern California where she worked as a travel agent. She used this job to travel extensively all over the world. She moved back to Bishop in 1994 and worked part-time for several years at Carlson- Wagonlit Travel. Virginia was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, and a brother. Virginia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Sheryl Holmes of Bishop; daughter, Sally Peters of Miami, Fla.; daughter, Heidi Holmes of Santa Monica; grandchildren, Carson Holmes of Venice Beach, Heather Doumerc of Westminster, Crystal Kaplan of Katmandu, Nepal, Amber Holmes of Belmont Shores and Veronica Holmes of Bishop; great-grandchildren, Aliya Kaplan of Kathmandu, Nepal and Tosh Whytock of Belmont Shores; one sister, Dorothy Coppledick of Piedmont; and numerous nieces and nephews.
