Funeral Services to be held today for Walter Bernard Walter H. Bernard passed away at the Northern Inyo Hospital on July 27 following a lengthy illness. Services are to be at 2:00 p.m. today at the Blake Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Ronald Smith will officiate. Walter was born in Benton on Sept. 2, 1908, and after attending school at Stewart, Nev., he went on to complete two years of junior college at Haskell, Kans. Majoring in physical education. He also took up the study of electrical and plumbing work, but returned to Steward where he served as the head coach in physical education for three years. He married Emily Yandell on November 21, 1938. They made their home in Bishop where he served as a member of the board of trustees of the Indian Community for approximately 12 years. Walter received the honor of being made an honorary member of VFW Post No. 8988 by his many friends several years ago. Having worked with youth groups all of his life, Walter was well known as a manager of Little League for the past five years. Last year he served as manager of the all star Little League team and was voted honorary manager of the year. Surviving him are his wife Emily; a daughter, Margaret; and two sons, Norman and Vernon; three grandchildren; his mother, and several brothers and sisters. The family made the request that donations to the Cancer Fund be made in his memory for cancer research.
