Willard Lee Mather 1930 - 2003 Honoring his request, no funeral services will be held for longtime Independence resident Willard Lee Mather, 73. Born to Grace and Ernie Mather on June 6, 1930, Mr. Mather died on July 11, 2003 at his home in Independence, after a long battle with emphysema. Willard was a supervisor at Librascope in Glendale for 20 years, working on the manufacture and repair of computer and technical equipment for the United States Navy. In 1969, he moved his family to Independence from La Canada, and took over the operation of the Arco Service Station on Edwards Street, later purchasing it and opening his own gas station and towing service. He was a member of the Burbank Masonic Lodge and an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and competitive shooting. He was preceded in death by sister, Elsie Lewis of Burbank. Willard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jackie; sister, Ruth Goldsberry of Idaho; mother-in-law, Mary Kouba of Independence; daughter, Ellen Mannatt of Independence; grandchildren, Donald Mather of Bakersfield, Chrissy Mather of Tampa, Fla. And Steven Mather and Gene Mannatt of Independence; and great-grandson, Chance Mather of Lone Pine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the National Rifle Associaiton.
