Family
of Rye and Anna Way
Contributor:
Joan Biggs, great-great granddaughter
My
personal interest in this project is linked to the year 1888 when my great
great grandparents, Rye and Anna Way
broke away from the other wagons that were headed to California. The reason
being that little baby Cliffie was not going to wait one more day to be born
and they entered Owens Valley on August 17 and sought refuge from the summer
heat under a large rock just outside of Bishop.
They
were some of the last wagon trains and their trip took them over three years.
They made Bishop their home and settled their family here.
My
great-grandmother, Bertha, was only 8 years old when her parents arrived in
Bishop.
She
grew up in the area and later married Judge George Hall. She lived in Big Pine most of her life and built both
the original upper and lower Glacier Lodge. The US Forestry Department claimed
the upper lodge and she continued to run the lower lodge for years before
selling it off.
My
grandfather, Willard Ahrens
ran the pack train out of Big Pine. My parents met at my grandfather's
restaurant in Big Pine and I was born in Bishop.
