Two Die In Accidents on Kern County Roads

The second fatality occurred at 8 o'clock last night when a car slammed into a palm tree on South U. S 99 killing the lone occupant, Martin Scott Bonzagni, 51, San Mateo. Bonzagni, general superintendent for the California Packing Corp. of San Francisco was believed killed outright when his late model sedan, northbound on U. S. 99 about 2 1/2 miles south of McKittrick Rd, drifted off the road and crashed head-on into a thick palm tree. The impact pushed the grill into a "U" shape and gouged out a five-inch hole in the tree. Bonzagni's body was lying behind the crushed steering wheel when officers arrived. One witness said Bonzagni had passed him minutes earlier and he observed the car stray to the edge of the road several times, then return to the roadway on each occasion. When the car left the road the last time, it narrowly missed one palm tree, then struck the second about 100 feet further along the shoulder. Bonzagni was taken to Kern General where he was pronounced dead.
